Girls weightlifting

Cape Coral’s Chantal Ferrer placed third Saturday in the FHSAA Class 2A state girls weightlifting championships at Suwannee High School in Live Oak. Ferrer’s total of 360 pounds trailed only Tara Yount of Charlotte (385) and Reece Chasteen of Columbia (370) in the 183-pound weight class.  She bench-pressed 175 pounds and lifted 185 pounds in the clean and jerk. Ferrer was the only Cape-area weightlifter to qualify for the state event.

Port Charlotte 62, Mariner 39: The Pirates (16-3) repeated as District 5A-11 champions with a convincing home win against the Tritons (14-8). Mariner will open the state Class 5A playoffs with a game at five-time District 5A-12 champion Naples (22-4) on Feb. 18. Port Charlotte will be home to take on Barron Collier (16-6). Zach Everly scored 12 points for the Tritons, while Port Charlotte’s Alex Perry led all scorers with 24 points.

Barron Collier 42, Cape Coral 25: Collier (21-7) ended Cape Coral’s season at 18-7. Senor Sierra Moore scored 16 points for the Seahawks.

Port Charlotte 55, Golden Gate 55: The Pirates (18-9) face an uphill battle in the next round, having lost to Barron Collier by 37 points during the regular season.

St. John Neumann 45, Bishop Verot 36: It will be an all-Collier County semifinal after the Celtics (14-6) ousted the Vikings (10-16) from the playoffs. Laura Broomhead battled an ankle sprain, but led Verot in scoring with 12 points. Reese Fry added 10 points for the Vikings.

Community School of Naples 60, Canterbury 27: CSN (14-4) gets home court for the regional semifinal on Tuesday after dominating Canterbury (7-16).
