Tournaments begin as regular seasons come to a close

District Tournaments

District 5A-11

Championship

Cape Coral 4, North Fort Myers 2: The Seahawks (13-6-1) upset the top-seeded Red Knights (14-1-3) to earn a home Class 5A playoff game against Naples (9-3-2) on Feb. 16. North will face another of Lee County’s top girls soccer teams, playing at 5A-12 champion Estero (14-2-2).

Boys Soccer

District 5A-11

Championship

Cape Coral 1, Island Coast 0: With their win Friday, the Seahawks (9-5-4) get a home Class 5A playoff game with Lely (14-4-2) on Feb. 17. Lely was top-seeded in District 5A-12, but fell to Golden Gate (15-5-3), which will play host to Island Coast (10-4-2).

The Gators came into Friday’s match with Cape as the top seed in 5A-11, but were playing on the road against the tournament host Seahawks.

District 4A-8 

Semifinals

Mariner 1, DeSoto 0: Nicco Gerke’s goal off Seanpaul Negron’s crosser in the second half lifted the Tritons (16-4-2) into the district final. The Bulldogs ended their year 10-6-3.

LaBelle 3, Lemon Bay 1: The second-seeded Cowboys (9-2-3) will provide the opposition for the Tritons after their win against the Manta Rays (8-7-3).

Tuesday’s championship

LaBelle at Mariner, 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

District 5A-11 

Championship

Port Charlotte 56, Cape Coral 35: Cape (18-6) will take to the road in the Class 5A state playoffs after its loss to the Pirates (17-9). The Seahawks will travel to Barron Collier (20-7) next Thursday. Collier crushed 5A-12 top seed Golden Gate 51-23 on Friday. Port Charlotte will be home to face Golden Gate (18-7).

Regular season

North Fort Myers 68, East Lee County 49: Completing a season sweep of the Jaguars (5-18), the Red Knights (5-15) head into the District 6A-11 tournament and a Tuesday game at Venice.

District 4A-8 Tournament

Semifinals

Mariner 12, Bradenton Bayshore 0: An emphatic victory propelled the Tritons (13-4-3) into the final of the district tournament. Ariana Wilson, Ryleigh Acosta and Cameron Fallacara each had two goals and an assist. Kira Wilson, Brooke Yount and Arianna McIntyre had two goals each. As the top seed, Mariner will host Monday’s contest against Lemon Bay.

Lemon Bay 8, LaBelle 0: The Manta Rays (11-6) won their semifinal in convincing fashion, earning a trip down to Mariner on Monday.

District 3A-8 Tournament

Semifinals

Bishop Verot 6, Parrish Community 2: Kendal Gargulia and Geri Herrera each had a hat trick for the Vikings (9-4-3). Gargulia raised her season total to 25 goals. Bishop Verot travels to Sarasota to play Cardinal Mooney on Tuesday in the district final.

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney 6, Bonita Springs 0: Mooney (11-4-1), the top seed in the tournament, had no trouble getting past the Bull Sharks and into the district final.

District 3A-8

Semifinals

Bishop Verot 5, Bonita Springs 1: Cooper Banks and Ryan Gadson had two goals each and Christyan Fevrier also scored as the Vikings (8-7-4) advanced to host the district championship match.

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney 1, Oasis 0: The Sharks lost a tough one, ending their season 6-6-2.

Monday’s championship

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney at Bishop Verot, 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

District 3A-7

Championship

Bishop Verot 36, Canterbury 21: The Vikings (10-15) locked up the district title and a spot in the Class 3A state playoffs. Bishop Verot will face the 3A-8 runner-up at home Tuesday in the first round. The Cougars will play at the 3A-8 winner the same night. St. John Neumann and Community School of Naples play in the 3A-8 final Friday.

Boys Basketball

Regular season

Ida Baker 62, Cypress Lake 49: Senior Night was a rousing success at Ida Baker, as the Bulldogs (14-6) rolled behind Bo Summersett’s 26 points. Mason Gonzales and Devyn Bradwell added 11 points each. Baker is home at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to face Island Coast in the District 5A-11 tournament.

Cypress Lake’s Junior Selvestre scored 23 points to reach 1,000 for his high school career.

Mariner 74, Bonita Springs 23: Mariner (13-7) tuned up for the District 5A-11 tournament with a comfortable victory against the Bull Sharks (1-14). The Tritons, seeded second in the district, will be home Wednesday against either Island Coast or Ida Baker.

Golden Gate 67, North Fort Myers 53: The Red Knights (4-15) have one more regular-season game Friday at East Lee County.
