Bay Oaks Recreational Campus organizing ‘Resolution Run’

By NATHAN MAYBERG - | Dec 23, 2020

In 1885, Emmett “Doc” Brown had to explain in “Back to the Future Part III” to a group of bemused saloon attendants that in the future people would still run despite having automobiles but they would do it for fun and recreation.

Beginning New Year’s Day through Jan. 7 as a benefit for Bays Oaks Recreational Campus youth sports and programs, the Town of Fort Myers Beach is hosting its first virtual 5k race “Resolution Run.”

Nicole Berzin, a senior recreation aid at Bay Oaks, said the event is about motivating people to become more active and get outside more during a time when people are spending more time inside.

The race is also a way to give folks an avenue for garnering more time working on the popular New Year’s resolution of getting into shape, Berzin said. “It’s a safe way to start your new year,” she said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kiwanis Club Fun Run was already canceled for this holiday season.

How will it all work? Those wishing to run or walk the 5k distance will be completing their efforts on the honor system. They can either do the walking or running at home on their own technology or treadmills or by picking a section of Fort Myers Beach to do their running.

Participants can run alone or with a group of friends though social distancing is required.

For more information on the event, you can sign up at the Town’s website at https://tinyurl.com/yy2rfq3e.

Those who enter the race will get a free shirt. There will also be a raffle on Jan. 8. The town will be posting video and photos from local entrants in the race on its website.

“It gives the community a way to get active,” Berzin said.

For a registration form, email Nicole.Berzin@fmbgov.com. Pictures and videos before, during, and after the race will be posted on the Bay Oaks social media pages. To maintain social distancing, running or walking in large groups is discouraged. The cost to enter is $25 to the public and $20 to members of the Friends of Bay Oaks.
