Swimming

Region 2A-2

Girls

Cape Coral finished second in the Region 2A-2 meet in Tampa, and had several individual event champions.  Melissa Blaine won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, Madison Lehman the 50 and 100 freestyle,  Phaedra Jeleniowski 1-meter diving, and Nicole Rodriguez 100 backstroke.  The Seahawks also won the 400 free relay.  Riley McFarland qualified for state with a third in 50 free, and Rodriguez qualified for the 200 freestyle (third).

The FHSAA state meet is next weekend in Stuart.

Boys

Cape Coral’s boys matched the girls with a second-place finish in the Region 2A-2 meet.  Top finishes individually were by Liam Dugan, second in both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. The 400 free relay team also came in second and the 200 free relay team was third. Thomas Tyler earned a third in the 100 backstroke and Daniel Calcedo a third in the 100 breaststroke.  

The state meet is in Stuart next weekend.

Regular season

North Fort Myers 24, Cypress Lake 14: The Red Knights found themselves trailing 14-10 in the third quarter, but rallied to complete an undefeated regular season (7-0). Brett Reed scored on touchdowns of 13 and 32 yards in the second half to give North the victory. Tavin Ward raced 37 yards for the Red Knights’ first score, and Brandon Bush added a 34-yard field goal. North opens Region 6A-4 playoff competition next week at Naples.

Palmetto Ridge 28, Bishop Verot 24: The Vikings jumped out to a 21-0 lead against an undefeated Palmetto Ridge (7-0) squad, fell into a 21-all tie, and took a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter. Palmetto Ridge scored a touchdown with 5:31 to play for the winning margin. Keon Anderson scored on two 3-yard runs, Malik Curtis returned an interception for a TD and Deaglan Camron added a field goal for the Vikings (6-4).  

Playoffs

Island Coast 36, Golden Gate 6: The Gators won their first playoff game in six years, taking a play-in game in the 6A-4 region playoffs. With the win, Island Coast advances to face South Fort Myers on the road next week. Gabe Fisher passed for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, and ran for another score. The Gators defense contributed with Glenn Green’s fumble return TD, and with a safety. Shanard Tyre also ran for an Island Coast touchdown.

Palm Bay 34, Mariner 0: A 7-0 game blew wide open after the Tritons (3-5) were stopped inside the Palm Bay 10 late in the third quarter. With the loss, Mariner was eliminated from the Region 5A-4 playoffs.

Oasis 1, Parrish Community 0: The Sharks (2-7) advanced in the playoffs when Parrish Community had to forfeit the teams’  3A-Region 2 play-in game. As a result; Oasis will travel to Frostproof next week in the Class 3A playoffs.

Cross country

Girls

Region 2A-3: Bishop Verot earned a trip to the state Class 2A meet with a second-place finish in the district meet in Brooksville.  Oasis finished 10th in the team competition. Julia Reitz led the Vikings with a fifth-place finish (20:41.40). Verot’s Kylie Thomas was 16th in 21:47.20, Lauren Mills 20th in 22:06.50, McKinley Parker 22nd in 22:11.70, Maren Pfleger 33rd at 22:31.00, Madison Thomas 42nd (22:54.20) and Mia Cross 43rd (23:03.20). Oasis runner Jenna Rosado crossed the line 27th in 22:20.40, while teammate Jaclynn Mars was 48th in 23:40.00, Dana Saccione 79th (27:17.00), Rachael Phillips 809th in 28:11.90 and Katherine Woodrow Frister 82nd in 28:41.70.

Boys

Region 2A-3: Bishop Verot runner Cooper Banks finished 10th in the region championship race, crossing the line in a time of 17:20.90. Teammate John Mertz was 18th in 17:54.20. Joshua Sykes of Oasis was 55th in 19:02.40.  

Thursday

Cape Coral 36, East Lee County 0: The Seahawks picked up their first victory of the season, piling up 29 points by halftime.  Damien Miranda had three rushing touchdowns, along with one each for Jack Janeway and Kareem Babernitch. Cape Coral left the Jaguars winless at 0-8. Cape will be at home against Estero in the Class 5A playoffs next Friday. The Seahawks will be seeking to avenge a 21-16 home loss back on Oct. 16.

Swimming and diving

Region 1A-2: Bishop Verot’s Julia Reitz finished fifth in Thursday’s diving event on the girls’ side, while Cooper Banks was 10th in boys diving. The swimming events are Saturday.
