Ida Baker, Oasis draw top seeds for district volleyball tournaments

Ida Baker will be the top seed in the District 5A-11 tournament, which begins play next week.  

The brackets, chosen by blind draw, have the Bulldogs and Mariner as the top two seeds. Both teams have first-round byes. Ida Baker will face the winner of Island Coast and Cape Coral, while the Tritons take on either Cypress Lake or Port Charlotte. 

First-round matches are Monday at Cape Coral and Cypress Lake, with semifinals at Ida Baker and Mariner on Wednesday and the championship Thursday, Oct. 15, at the highest remaining seed.

In District 3A-8, Oasis drew the top seed and a first-round match with Bishop Verot. The winner will face either Canterbury or Gateway Charter. Bonita Springs is designated as tournament host.  The 3A-8 tournament starts Monday, with semifinals Tuesday and the championship Thursday.

Volleyball

Gulf Coast 3, Bishop Verot 0: The Sharks (9-3) rolled, 25-15, 25-12, 25-10 on Monday in a non-district match-up with the Vikings (3-13).

Fort Myers 3, Ida Baker 0: The Green Wave, ranked 14th in Florida by MaxPreps, swept the match by scores of 25-16, 25-8, 25-10 as the Bulldogs slipped to 7-6.  Ida Baker closes out the regular season with a noon Thursday home match with Mariner. 

Girls golf

Private 8 Championship: Bishop Verot took the title in Monday’s tournament at Stoneybrook in Estero.  The Vikings’ 322 total was 23 strokes better than second-place Community School of Naples.  Morgan Franklin was medalist with a 73, with Vikings teammate Talia Rodino third at 75 and Sarah Matkowski tied for fourth with a 77.  Also for Bishop Verot, Ava Aloia carded a 97, Monika Martinez 105 and Grace Ryan 112.

Boys golf

Private 8 Championship: Community School of Naples edged out Bishop Verot by two strokes (302 to 304) for the team title at Stoneybrook.  However, the Vikings’ Dalton Payne claimed medalist honors with a round of 70.  Christian Allen tied for fourth at 74.  Kevin Kelly Jr. tied for ninth with a 79 and Michael Bevins 13th at 80.
