Clearwater Countryside eliminates North Fort Myers girls in Region 5A-3 soccer

By Staff | Feb 16, 2020

This was a hard pill to swallow for the North Fort Myers Red Knights’ girls soccer team.

A Clearwater Countyside team that had a long and winding road, mistakenly going first to Fort Myers High, came in and took a 3-2 victory in the Region 5A-3 semifinals.

“We got beat,” Red Knights coach Nick Erickson said. “We got beat. Unfortunately, we just weren’t very cohesive tonight from the get-go. For whatever reason … We gave up that kind of a cheap one early, and then we were just out of sync the entire time.

“Number 7 (Chloey Conte) had a great game. We had a hard time containing her, and she made us pay.

“Simple as that. She had a great game.”

The Cougars, seeded third in the region, will take to the road again Tuesday, this time to top-seeded Estero, for a trip to the state 5A semifinals.

Estero blanked Naples 2-0 in the other region semifinal contest.

The Red Knights let in a Conte goal just 1:08 into the match. It took until 26:01 of the second half for Emilee Hauser to score the equalizer, taking an indirect kick from Makenzy Dupree and firing it into the net.

Following the second-half water break, the Cougars took control.

Conte scored her second goal with 11:57 in the match, and Cassidy Latzke made it 3-1 with only 6:24 to go.

Alex Spiller drew North Fort Myers within 3-2 with 2:28 to go, but there would be no equalizer this time.

“When it’s that kind of game, you need for things to go your way,” Erickson said. “We hit the post three times, I think (twice the crossbar, once the upright), and we had two, three creep by the back end.”

North Fort Myers played without speedy winger Michelle Horan, who was injured in Tuesday’s first-round region match. Horan was on crutches watching as her teammates tried to prevail without her.

Hauser’s goal was her 31st of the season, and her final tally for the Red Knights.

She had 45 goals as a junior.

She’ll be playing at the University of Arkansas this fall.
