Oasis girls win weather delayed district soccer match, 8-0
After a long delay, the Oasis Sharks made short work of Gateway Charter.
The Oasis girls soccer team finished off an 8-0 victory Thursday evening that sent the Sharks into Monday’s District 3A-8 semifinal match at Bishop Verot.
Oasis held a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the match on Wednesday when the lightning alarm went off. With radar warning things only got worse, the officials called the match about 50 minutes later.
The two teams got back onto the field Thursday at Pelican Soccer Complex, and the Sharks (11-4) got right back to crushing the Griffins (2-15-1).
The score was 5-0 by the first-half water break, and Oasis made it 8-0 with a few minutes remaining in the half. All that mattered then was not letting Gateway score, which would have prolonged the contest into a second half. The Griffins could not mount a serious challenge, and that was that.
Senior Mackenzie Morano, who scored once before the match was halted Wednesday, added two more goals Thursday and set up another with a corner kick. Her hat trick was matched by freshman sister Mallory Morano, who scored once Thursday after nailing the first two Wednesday.
The scoring wasn’t all in the Morano family, however. Junior Kinsey Dodd scored twice and sophomore Viktoria Fahnemann drove home the game-ending eighth goal.
“We won. That’s the most important part,” Sharks’ coach Jourko Gorrisen said. “We won, and we’re on to the next round, and now Bishop Verot.”
So Monday is when things get serious.
Despite a middling 7-7-1 overall record, Bishop Verot has been a thorn in the Sharks’ side for years. Not only did the Vikings win this season’s only matchup 4-1, Verot made a habit of knocking off Oasis in the district tournament finals over the years.
There’s a new district this year, and new rules that give a points system priority over wins and losses.
That point system made the Vikings the second seed in District 3A-8 and left the Sharks in third.
As a comparison, Bishop Verot’s 198 points are far more than twice as good as Gateway Charter’s 467. Less is more in the points system.
No, there is no reason to expect a cakewalk Monday when the Sharks visit the Vikings.
If the Sharks have an advantage, it will be that they’ve gotten in a tournament round in while the Vikings will have had gone six days since their regular-season finale There may be a little rust for Verot to shake off.
“Trust me, it’s not going to be an 8-0 win,” Gorissen said. “The last game we lost (was Jan. 7 against the Vikings) 4-1. This time it’s going to be a little bit different. We have a different mentality, and we have to play harder than we did today.”
Sarasota Military defeated Bonita Springs 3-1 on Wednesday and will face top-seeded crosstown rival Cardinal Mooney in Monday’s other semifinal.
