Mariner outlasts Pt. Charlotte 1-0 in 12 innings
Mariner posted its 15th win of the season Friday night in a 1-0, 12-inning nail-biter at Port Charlotte.
Hannah Holloway pitched all 12 innings, striking out 15 to earn the win.
With the bases loaded and two out in the top of the 12th, Ariana Cruz forced in Julia Mekelet with the game-winning run and Holloway made the run hold up in the bottom of the 12th. With two runners on, Holloway caught the final pop-up out to preserve the win.
Jaliyah Lopez and Abby Love provided two hits apiece for the Tritons (15-8), who host Lemon Bay on April 19.
Baseball
Ida Baker 9, Cypress Lake 3: Alex Rios tripled and drove in two runs with a pair of hits Friday night to earn Ida Baker a victory that clinched the No. 1 seed for the district tournament.
Matt McGarty also contributed two hits to back the one-run, six strikeout effort of pitcher Dakota Kayatta (3-2) over 5 1/3 innings.
The Bulldogs snapped a 1-1 tie with a four-run third-inning outburst to take the lead for good. They added four more runs in the sixth to seal the win. The Bulldogs (14-4) play at DeSoto County on Monday.
Port Charlotte 6, Mariner 2: An early 2-0 lead did not last Friday night at Mariner gave up three runs in the fourth inning as Port Charlotte claimed the victory.
Two of the Pirates’ runs in that inning were unearned.
Andrew Arsenault (2-4) took the loss, surrendering four runs, three earned, and six hits with seven strikeouts over five innings. Justin Waibel drove in both of the Tritons runs with a two-run single in the third inning. The Tritons managed just three hits on the night.
The Tritons (8-10) play Seacrest on Monday in Riverdale’s Battle of the Borders tournament at Terry Park.
North Fort Myers 16, Riverdale 0: North took just four innings to dispose of Riverdale Friday night, pounding out 13 runs in the third inning to invoke the mercy-rule.
Justin Bethke pitched a four-inning no-hitter for the Red Knights. Peyton Bourque doubled and Josue Morales tripled and drove in a total of four runs to lead the assault.
The Bulldogs (7-11) play at Southwest Florida Christian on Tuesday.
