FSW seals 20th win
Tremell Murphy and Nych Smith combined for 48 points Wednesday night to lead Florida SouthWestern State to its 20th victory of the season with a 94-91 overtime decision over Polk State at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
The Buccaneers (20-5, 6-1 conference) remain in a tie for first place in the Suncoast Conference with St. Petersburg.
Tremell Smith topped the Bucs with 25 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Murphy registered a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Murphy chipped in with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Bucs host State College of Florida on Saturday.
Softball: FSW’s softball team swept a doubleheader from Ave Maria 8-0 and 8-0 Wednesday at City of Palms Park.
The win extends the Bucs’ unbeaten season-opening win streak to nine games. They travel to Fort Pierce on Friday to take on No. 13-ranked Indian River State.
Courtney Gettins pitched a one-hitter and tallied seven strikeouts to pick up the first-game win. Mikenzie Vaughn went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Savannah Retallick was 2-for-2 with a stolen base and drove home the game-ending RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the second game, Riley Russell went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases. Graysen Gladden went 2-for-3 and Giovanna Watts picked up the win on the mound.
