Cape’s seed in district up in air following tie with Cypress
Cape Coral’s 3-3 tie with Cypress Lake on Tuesday put the Seahawks in a bit of a bind as far as district seeding for the tournament goes.
“It was a district game we really needed, but seeding now is critical. I would say Cypress Lake (4-0-1 district) is close to locking up the No 1 seed and it’s between us (3-1-1 district) and Charlotte for No. 2,” said Seahawks coach Aldo Nardiello.
The Seahawks (8-3-3 overall) tied the game 1-1 before taking a 2-1 lead at halftime with both unassisted first-half goals coming off the foot of Daniel Medina. After the Panthers tied the game at 2-2, Medina assisted on Kevin Regana’s goal with about 18 minutes remaining to claim a 3-2 edge.
Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the Panthers managed to tie the game again with about seven minutes to play. Cape goaltender Antonio Garcia-Castro was credited with nine saves, a couple of those being real “beauties.”
The Seahawks play another district match on Friday against Dunbar before the season takes its holiday break.
Girls Soccer
North Fort Myers 16, Dunbar 0: Four Red Knights scored multiple goals Tuesday night to lead North Fort Myers’ season-high goals tally in shutting out Dunbar in half the regulation minutes.
Emile Hauser led the scoring with four goals and two assists while Taylor Kruse tallied three goals and two assists. Brooke Hawkins also scored three goals with tori Kowalczyk added two goals and four assists.
The Knights (12-1-1) host Mariner on Friday.
Girls Basketball
Oasis 42, LaBelle 39: Savannah Lang continues to lead Oasis offensively, knocking down a team-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and six steals Tuesday night in a victory at LaBelle.
Aliya Wilson added nine points and seven rebounds for the Sharks, who host St. John Neumann on Friday.
Mariner 40, Oasis 27: Brooke Powell paced Mariner’s victory at Oasis Monday night with a double-double performance of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Sister Kristin Powell just missed a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. While the Tritons’ offense seized the lead early on, it was the defensive pressure on the Sharks that sealed the victory.
Savannah Lang tallied 13 points to lead the Sharks with Rylee Casey adding 7 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Tritons (5-7) don’t play again until Dec. 20 at East Lee County. Oasis is at LaBelle on Tuesday.
Boys Basketball
Lemon Bay 70, Ida Baker 67: James Cuttino pitched in a game-high 30 points Tuesday night, but it still was not enough to salvage a victory against Lemon Bay.
Cutting also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out two assists for the Bulldogs, who play at Cypress Lake on Thursday.
SWF Christian 72, Ida Baker 63: Devin Hanley and James Cuttino scored in double figures Monday night in Baker’s losing cause at WEF Christian.
Hanley hit for a well rounded 17 points to go with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Cuttino added 14 points with three rebounds.
The Bulldogs (3-5) host Lemon Bay in a district game on Tuesday.
