Football is over until fall
Last week it was Ida Baker, Mariner and Bishop Verot on the football field wrapping up the spring practice period with live game conditions against another school.
This week, North Fort Myers, Oasis, Cape Coral and Island Coast do the same.
Oasis traveled to Donahue Academy on Thursday while North Fort Myers stayed home to face Sarasota Riverview.
On Friday, Cape Coral visits Dunbar while Island Coast hosts Fort Myers. And then it’s over until August, when teams come together again to get ready for the fall regular season.
“Spring has been really good,” said Island Coast coach John Schwochow. “We got a lot accomplished. My one goal was to get batter as a football team and I think we accomplished that. We installed more of the system I wanted, but didn’t get a chance to do last spring.”
The Gators strive to be competitive against Fort Myers tonight, having made those changes.
“It comes down to executing and doing the things we want and to see the progression on the field,” said Schwochow. “We are smaller than Island Coast has been in the past, but we’ve been able to use certain techniques to be better. With a couple of new coaches on the staff I think ww hav eupgraded there.”
With the spring session coming to an end tonight, Schwochow summed it up as a quiet spring – knock on wood.
“We came through healthy with only a few bumps and bruises,” Schwochow said. “That’s one of the main things you want is to get through spring healthy.”
Schwochow was pleased and impressed with several athletes who stepped up during the spring session.
Marcus Evans, who transferred from Island Coast to Bishop Verot last year, has returned to his original school to bolster the Gators. Calvin Grannon, a freshman, impressed the coaches as did Broderich Hamilton on the defensive unit and Chris Taylor on the offensive line.
The Gators suffered the loss of several contributing players to graduation.
