All of the blood, sweat and tears associated with spring football practice this month is drawing to an end for West Zone public schools over the next eight days.

Two Cape Coral schools and Bishop Verot play their spring classics to close out the workload and begin the healing process – only to start all over in the fall. Verot was the first to play Wednesday night at Cypress Lake.

Mariner hosts Riverdale and Ida Baker hosts Barron Collier on Friday, both kicking off at 7 p.m.

“We have some new faces in different spots,” said Bulldogs coach Brian Conn, who loses 17 seniors to graduation. “Our offensive line started to click this spring and the seniors stepped up and did a good job of learning the offense.”

Barron Collier brings a similar offense to the game and has size up front.

“We will have to play with leverage up front,” said Conn. “We spent the last three weeks preparing and learning the basics. We kept it basis and simple more than in the past due to inexperience at certain positions.”
