Eagles look to close season on winning note
Fresh off Wednesday’s 8-3 loss to No. 2-ranked Miami, FGCU gets ready to host conference rival Kennesaw State in a weekend three-game season-ending series at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles (24-27, 9-9 A-Sun) begin the final series against the conference front-unner with a 6:30 p.m. start on Thursday followed by game two at 6:30 on Friday and the finale at noon on Saturday.
With conference seedings still uyp for grabs for the final weekend, five Eagles seniors will be honored prior to first pitch Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles head to Nashville next week for the Atlantic Sun Championship tournament.
Despite matching the Hurricanes in hits and retiring 14 of the last 15 batters faced, the Eagles couldn’t overcome an early 5-0 deficit Tuesday night at Miami. The Hurricanes won all three meetings with the Eagles this season.
Making his first collegiate start in a hostile road environment, Cory Weiand (0-1, 10.80 ERA) suffered the loss, while Miami’s Jesse Lepore (8-0, 2.37) earned the win and Keven Pimentel recorded the save.
“We hung tough in the later innings but couldn’t get out of the early hole,” said Eagles coach Dave Tollett. “It was tough for us to get anything going with nine strikeouts on the night, and we have to do a better job of putting the bat on the ball in some key situations.”
