Miracle win in 10th 6-1
JUPITER – Trey Vavra hit a two-out home run in the top of the ninth inning, and then delivered a two-out, two-run single to cap a five run rally in the 10th Wednesday night to lead the Miracle to a 6-1 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads.
The Miracle have won four straight games following a three-game losing streak.
The game featured a pitching duel between the Miracle’s Kohl Stewart and Jupiter’s Jeff Brigham as the game remained scoreless through six frames. The Hammerheads finally broke through against reliever Yorman Landa in the seventh. Yuniel Ramirez led off with a double, and then scored two outs later on a single by Justin Bohn.
That lead looked like it might hold up, but Vavra had other plans as he launched a 3-2 pitch over the left-field fence with two outs in the top of the ninth off Raudel Lazo, pitching in Jupiter on a rehab assignment from the Miami Marlins.
After the Hammerheads put a couple of different runners on base, but failed to score in the bottom of the inning, the Miracle offense took control of the game in the 10th. Edgar Corcino led off with a double, and took third on a sacrifice bunt. Newcomer Kevin Garcia came through with his first Miracle hit, a ground single to center to score Corcino and Fort Myers had its first lead of the game at 2-1.
Chris Paul followed two batters later with a ground-rule double to right to increase to advantage to 4-1 and Vavra added some insurance with his two-run infield single.?Brandon Peterson pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn his first win of the season in his debut. Stewart, meanwhile, allowed just three hits while walking three and striking out five in six innings of work. Miracle starting pitchers have now tossed 25 1/3 innings over their last four games without allowing a run. The pitching staff as a whole has only given up two runs in that same span, covering a total of 39 innings.
The Miracle (11-8) play the Hammerheads (7-12) in the final game of this three-game series Thursday morning.
