Mariner scores early, holds on to beat Seacrest

Mariner scored three unearned runs in the first inning then held on to beat Seacrest 3-2 Monday night in Riverdale’s Battle of the Border tournament at Terry Park.

Justin Waibel (2-1) tossed three innings to earn the win, allowing two earned runs on two hits. Three other Mariner pitchers preserved the victory.

Louis Alverro, who led the team with three base hits, plated the game-winning run with a two-out single that gave Mariner a 3-0 lead at the time. Christian Velez contributed two hits with one RBI.

The Tritons (14-9) face Riverdale on Tuesday in the second round of the tournament.

Mariner 19, North Fort Myers 3: Jimmy Meredith, Justin Waibel and Christian Velez all drove in three runs to lead Mariner’s five-inning victory last Friday.

Meredith and Waibel each cracked three-run triples while Velez doubled. Andrew Arsenault and Jorge Sunti each drove in two runs with a pair of base hits.

The Tritons (13-9) scored nine runs in the first inning to put the game away early. They added seven runs in the third inning.

Port Charlotte 2, Ida Baker 1: Port Charlotte took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning and held off Baker last Friday.

Matt Lapoint tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and scattered seven hits to pick up the win for the Pirates.

Chris Schrowe (6-1) matched Lapoint with seven strikeouts over seven innings to take the loss. Christian Proffitt, Dakota Kayatta and Christian Menendez each collected two hits for the Bulldogs (17-4). Menendez drove home Kayatta for the Bulldogs’ lone run in the sixth inning.

Fort Myers 7, Mariner 4: Mariner banged out 12 base hits last Thursday, but a four-run sixth-inning rally lifted Fort Myers to victory.

Andrew Arsenault drove in two Tritons runs with a pair of base hits. Mason Eicher, Justin Waibel and Nick Lamoureux also contributed two hits apiece.

Tied 3-3 after three innings, the Tritons took a 4-3 lead in the fourth that lasted until the Green Wave’s rally in the sixth. The rally handed Joey Sagi (1-2) the loss in relief of Andrew Patton, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings.

The Tritons (12-9) committed three errors during the Wave’s game-winning rally.

Palmetto 3, Island Coast 2: Leading 2-1 through six innings, Island Coast misplayed a fly ball in the sixth that led to two runs and a loss to Palmetto last Thursday.

Matt Steele drove in one Gators run with a single and Alex Perez drove in the other with a single. Steele and Felix Camacho contributed two hits apiece while Anthony Churlin added a double to the Gators’ offense. Chase Chatman (2-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing one earned run on four hits and two strikeouts over seven innings.

Softball

District 6A-11: Mariner cruised past Island Coast 15-0 in four innings in Monday night’s tournament opening round.

Hannah Holloway (16-5) led the Tritons on the mound and at the plate. She allowed no hits and struck out seven in the shut out while driving in a pair of runs with three base hits and scoring three times. Amanda Myers drove in a run with two hits and scored twice.

An eight-run first inning set the tone for the Tritons to establish a 14-0 lead after three innings. The Tritons (20-6) host the winner between Cypress Lake and Port Charlotte in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Makenzie Buss struck out 11 batters and scattered five hits en route to Cape Coral’s 6-2 victory over Ida Baker.

Buss (15-5) also drove in three runs with a pair of doubles at the plate. Ally Slaughter plated two runs with a 3-for-4 night while Heather Dubai and Dru Ricci each contributed two hits.

The Bulldogs (6-17) were led by Denia Bent’s three hits, including a home run and a double, and a double by Andrea Walker.

The Seahawks (15-6) scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead they never relinquished. They play at top-seeded North Fort Myers on Tuesday.

Mariner 5, SWF Christian 1: Hannah Holloway allowed no earned runs on just two hits while striking out 11 in Mariner’s victory last Friday.

Holloway (16-5) also drove in a run with two base hits. Amanda Myers delivered the game-winning run with a single in the fourth inning, staking the Tritons (20-5) to a 2-0 lead at the time.

Madison James drove in two runs with a pair of hits for the Tritons.

Fort Myers 3, Mariner 0: Fort Myers shut out Mariner last Thursday by allowing the Tritons just two base hits.

Hannah Holloway and Monica Montes collected the two hits with Holloway (15-5) being dealt the defeat on the mound despite scattering five hits and striking out five batters without allowing an earned run.

North Fort Myers 16, South Fort Myers 0: Mackenzie Peterson didn’t allow a base hit in North’s three-inning victory last Thursday over South Fort Myers.

North banged out 15 base hits and put the game out of reach on the mercy rule by scoring 10 runs in the third inning to close it out.
