FGCU assistant moving on
FGCU women’s basketball assistant coach Nicki Collen has resigned from her position with the program in order to accept a position with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun.
After two seasons on the FGCU sideline, Collen will become an assistant coach and will start with the Sun later this month.
Collen joined the Eagles prior to the 2014-15 season and instantly made an impact. The team went 64-9 in her two seasons and compiled an Atlantic Sun Conference record of 28-0 in regular season action.
With Collen’s assistance, the team won its first ever NCAA Tournament game last season and advanced to the WNIT Championship this year.
“Nicki has done a tremendous job the last two seasons at FGCU,” said Eagles coach Karl Smesko. “Our program has really benefitted from her work here. She will make a great head coach someday soon. For now, we wish her the best in the WNBA. I think it is a great opportunity for her.”
Collen will join Connecticut head coach Curt Miller for the 2016 season, which begins May 14. With the Sun, Collen will specialize in team scouting and player development.
