Bulldogs score early, hold on to down Riverdale, 5-2
Ida Baker scored two runs each in the first and third innings Monday night en route to a 5-2 victory at Riverdale.
The third win in a row for the Bulldogs (13-2) was led by Christian Proffitt’s two hits and the pitching of Dillion Lewis (1-0), who scattered four hits with one strikeout over 4 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Gabe Villaverde contributed a double to the cause.
Ida Baker 4, Island Coast 0: Ida Baker avenged an earlier week loss to Island Coast in a shutout victory Friday to split the season series with the city and District 6A-11 rival Gators.
Luke Endsley’s two-run single in the Bulldogs’ (12-2) three-run second inning rally provided all the runs needed. The rest was up to starting and winning pitcher Chris Schrowe (4-0), who tossed a complete-game two-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
Endsley finished with two hits and the two RBI while Christian Proffitt and Christian Menendez both contributed doubles. Menendez’s double led off the second-inning rally.
David Matta took the loss for the Gators (9-6). Felix Camacho had the only two hits the Gators got off Schrowe.
Cape Coral 6, Cypress Lake 3: Tre Waltz drove in one run with three base hits and scored three times Friday to lead Cape Coral’s win at Cypress Lake.
Waltz also pitched three innings in relief to record the victory. The Seahawks (12-6) came from behind with a five-run outburst in the fifth inning to win the game on a combination of hits and Panthers errors.
Oasis 8, South Fort Myers 6: Josh Morales delivered the game-winning runs with a two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning Friday, staking Oasis (7-8) to an 8-2 lead at the time in a victory over South Fort Myers.
Morales also pitched two innings in relief of Austin Brock (1-0) to record a save. Stephen Siciliano collected three base hits with one RBI, scored a run and stole a base for the Sharks (7-8).
Ida Baker 10, East Lee County 0: Baker snapped its two-game losing streak last Thursday at East Lee County.
Chris Sabo tossed three innings of one-hit, one-strikeout ball to earn the shutout for the Bulldogs (11-2). Cody Hill led the offense with three hits, including one of three doubles. Luke Endsley and Matt Laker also contributed doubles.
Estero 3, Mariner 0: Mariner was held to just two base hits last Thursday in a shutout loss to Estero.
Mason Eicher and Andrew Arsenault accounted for the Tritons’ hits while D.J. Varner (2-3) took the hit on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits over three innings while striking out four.
Island Coast 2, Fort Myers 1: Chase Chatman (2-1) pitched a complete-game five-hitter last Thursday, allowing Fort Myers one run while striking out seven.
Miguel Vidal drove in the Gators’ first run with a single in the first inning. Felix Camacho hit a fielder’s choice ground ball that plated the game-winning run.
Softball
Mariner 7, St. John Neumann 1: Abby Love, Jasmine O’Neill and Madison James came through with two hits apiece Monday night to lead Mariner’s victory at St. John Neumann.
The Tritons (14-5), who led 4-1 heading into the seventh inning, got a stellar effort on the mound by Hannah Holloway (11-5), who struck out 11 batters and allowed just one earned run.
Riverdale 4, Ida Baker 2: Jada Young doubled and drove in a run while Denia Bent doubled at the plate and pitched four shutout innings while allowing two hits Monday in Ida Baker’s loss at Riverdale.
Mariner 15, Gateway Charter 0: Hannah Holloway pitched a mercy-rule perfect game Friday striking out seven to carry Mariner to a shutout victory.
Holloway also contributed two doubles and a home run at the plate to drive in three runs. Abby Love contributed two hits while the Tritons(14-4), who scored 14 runs in the second inning alone, took advantage of 10 walks.
Cape Coral 14, Cypress Lake 0: Makenzie Buss (10-5) allowed one hit and struck out seven Friday to pitch Cape Coral (10-6) to a five-inning shutout victory.
Heather Dubay and Tara Striggow came through with three hits apiece with Bri Lopez adding two hits.
Ida Baker 15, Island Coast 3: Jada Young drove in four runs Friday with a pair of doubles to lead Baker to a lopsided victory.
Jasmine Casiano and Tiffany Wilenius both drove in two runs with two hits for the Bulldogs (4-13).
Bishop Verot 3, American Heritage 0: A two-run double by Jennie Boisvert sparked Bishop Verot’s victory Friday over previously undefeated and state-ranked American Heritage.
Amanda Higgins pinch-ran for Boisvert and later scored the third run on a sac-fly by Erin Kyle. Nicole Rodriguez struck out 10 batters while allowing just three hits to earn the win.
The Vikings (14-4) host North Fort Myers on Thursday.
Ida Baker 11, East Lee County 3: Denia Bent led Baker’s lopsided victory last Thursday on the mound and at the plate.
Bent struck out 10 batters to limit the Jaguars’ offense while contributing two hits and one RBI at the plate. Tiffany Wilenius added two hits, including a double and two RBI. Andrea Walker also drove in two runs on three hits.
Mariner 5, Estero 1: Hannah Holloway (10-4) limited Estero to two hits and one run while striking out 14 batters last Thursday to lead Mariner’s victory.
Abby Love drove in a run with two hits while Amanda Myers scored two runs and had two hits.
