Tritons upend Bulldogs in 12 innings
Ida Baker’s perfect start to the baseball season is over. It took 12 innings to decide the outcome in Friday night’s game at Mariner.
With one out, Jorge Sunti’s fielder’s choice ground ball to second base pushed across the game-winning run, earning Mariner a 3-2 victory over their crosstown rivals.
Mason Eicher, who scored the eventual game-winning run, contributed three hits and scores two runs for the Tritons. Sunti finished with three hits and one RBI while Christian Velez added two hits, including a double.
The result made a winner of Justin Waibel, who pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hit. Christian Menendez took the loss in relief of Chris Schrowe, who tossed eight innings scattering nine hits while allowing one earned run and striking out five.
Andrew Arsenault started for the Tritons, tossing six innings and allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Eicher pitched four innings, allowing no runs on two hits and four strikeouts.
The Tritons (6-7) scored single runs in the second and third innings with the Bulldogs (10-1) tying the game in the sixth inning.
The Tritons play at South Fort Myers on Tuesday while Baker hosts Island Coast.
Island Coast 8, Lehigh 2: David Mata allowed one run and struck out four over four innings Friday night to help Island Coast post a victory over Lehigh.
Anthony Churlin had two hits, including a double, and one RBI to lead the Gators. Alex Perez contributed a two-run single. The Gators (7-5) play at Ida Baker on Tuesday.
Softball
Mariner 10, Ida Baker 0: Hannah Holloway led Mariner in all phases of the game Friday night, striking out 14 batters and allowing no runs on two hits in a six-inning shutout victory.
Holloway also led at the plate, driving in two runs with three base hits. The Tritons (13-4) play at Riverdale on Monday.
Cape Coral 15, Port Charlotte 3: Dru Ricci led a trio of Seahawks with two hits to back the pitching of Makenzie Buss (8-5) in Friday’s five-inning victory.
Ricci scored three runs and drove in two while Ashley Wagner scored two runs and Ally Slaughter scored one and drove in another for the Seahawks (8-5), who play at Fort Myers on Monday.
