Baker blanks North 2-0
Chris Schrowe had a no-hitter broken up with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night, but Ida Baker held off North Fort Myers 2-0 to extend the Bulldogs’ unbeaten streak to nine games.
Schrowe (3-0) wound up with a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.
Christian Menendez walked in the third inning and, after two passed balls put him on third base, scored the game-winning run on Cody Hill’s RBI single.
Ryan Clay attempted a sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning, but a fielder’s choice effectively erased Christian Proffitt, who singled, at second base. A wild pitch advanced Clay to second from where he scored on Chris Sabo’s RBI single for the insurance run.
The Bulldogs (9-0) host Mariner on Tuesday.
Cape Coral 11, Mariner 9: Tre Waltz and Spencer Roach drove in two runs apiece Friday night to lift Cape Coral to victory at Mariner.
Both wound up with three hits as did Brandon Dye to lead the Seahawks. Andrew Arsenault had three hits and drove in three runs for the Tritons.
The Seahawks led most of the way, grabbing an 11-8 lead after scoring four runs in the sixth inning. They laid down more than a few bunt singles among their 15 singles in the game.
The Tritons (5-6) were hampered by 13 strikeouts. D.J. Varner tossed four innings and allowed six runs in taking the loss. Matthew Slater (2-0) pitched one inning in relief to earn the victory.
The Seahawks (9-4) play at Port Charlotte while the Tritons (5-6) visit Ida Baker on Tuesday.
Island Coast 11, Port Charlotte 2: Felix Camacho allowed two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts Friday to help Island Coast defeat Port Charlotte.
Chase Chatman delivered an RBI double and David Mata added two hits to lead the Gators, who scored nine unanswered runs to break a 2-2 tie after four innings.
The Gators (4-5) play at Estero on Monday.
Softball
Mariner 3, Cape Coral 2: Hannah Holloway led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double and eventually scored the game-winning run on Abby Love’s RBI single that broke the 2-2 tie and handed the Tritons a one-run victory Friday.
Holloway (8-4) allowed five hits and no runs while striking out 12 Seahawks.
Jasmine O’Neill’s RBI double tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning setting the stage for the eighth-inning heroics.
Makenzie Buss was the losing pitcher while scoring both Seahawks runs, both unearned.
The Tritons (11-4) play at Ida Baker on Tuesday.
North Fort Myers 23, Ida Baker 1: Mackenzie Peterson struck out 10 batters while allowing just one base hit Friday as North pounded Baker.
Jessie Valorous and Shelby Coyne each contributed four hits while Madolyn White and Peterson added three hits apiece. Valorous drove in four runs, Coyne six runs, White three runs and Peterson two RBI.
