Coaches like new scheduling

2 min read

It’s something new to the area, but baseball and softball coaches have taken a liking to the practice of scheduling home-and-home games with opponents within three or four days of each other.

One of the more appealing aspects, particularly for baseball, is a team does not have to be concerned about facing the other’s best pitcher for both games because of pitch count and innings rules.

It happens again tonight as Mariner prepares to host rival Cape Coral, Ida Baker prepares to host North Fort Myers, and Island Coast travels to Port Charlotte. All three matchups – in baseball and softball – are return matches after playing Tuesday night.

Look for the home-and-home scheduling to continue.

Canterbury: Stacy Sizemore has steppped down as Canterbury football coach and Upper School Dean of Students effective at the end of the current school year, the school reported Wednesday.

He is taking a position at Melbourne Central Catholic in order to be closer to his family.

“We are grateful to Coach Sizemore for his efforts this past season in stabilizing our football program, and pointing us in the right direction,” said Head of School Rick Kirschner.

Derrick Crudup Jr. has been named to take over the football program. Crudup was the Cougars’ offensive coordinator this past season.

Crudup was an accomplished quarterback at the University of Miami and won a National Championship with the Hurricanes in 2001. He also played three years in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Crudup’s coaching experience includes offensive coordinator at high schools in Georgia and Alabama, Stillman College in Alabama, as well as The University of Alabama under coach Nick Saban.

“Coach Crudup’s passion for the game of football is contagious,” Canterbury athletic director Frank Turco said. “On top of that, he already has developed great relationships with our student-athletes over the past year. I know he will continue to lead them to success both on the field and in the classroom.”
