A 23-11 run in the third quarter Tuesday night carried Mariner to their third appearance in the regional finals for the third time in the last four years.

“We played championship defense down the stretch,” said Tritons coach James Harris of his team’s 64-55 Region 5A-3 Semifinal victory at Bradenton Southeast. “We were up by 13 starting the fourth quarter and held off a run by Southeast.”

Despite a game-high 33 points by Ronald Taylor, Southeast was unable to play catch-up at the end.

“We beat them up in the paint, scoring 48 of our points in the paint,” said Harris. “We want to be the first (Mariner) team in 20 years to go back to the state championship and we have three more wins to do that.”

The Tritons will host Tampa Jesuit in the Region 5A-3 Finals on Friday.

Jahmel Myers led the Tritons with a double-double performance of 26 points and 17 rebounds. Isaiah Darrett backed him up with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Amari Haynes contributed nine points and eight boards to the cause.

The Tritons (25-3) were in a close game in the first half, and led by one point at the break before going on that third-quarter offensive surge.
