Tritons win district title, host St. Pete Gibbs in regional

Mariner claimed its fourth district basketball championship in five seasons last Friday with a 54-40 victory at Naples Lely.

Dominique Carpenter came through with a season-high 17 points to lead the Tritons to the District 5A-12 Championship. The Tritons (23-3) host St. Petersburg Gibbs in the Region 5A-3 quarterfinals on Thursday.

Jahmel Myers added nine points and a season-high 15 rebounds for the Tritons.

“We played championship level defense tonight,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “Our defense was spectacular. We made it difficult for them to score.”

A 9-0 run in the early minutes put the Tritons in charge the rest of the night as the district champs prevailed over the Trojans for the third time this season.

Girls Basketball

Region 6A-3: After a low-scoring first period, Cape Coral ramped up the defensive pressure and pulled out a 41-32 victory over Osceola last Thursday in the Region 6A-3 quarterfinal playoffs at Cape High.

The defensive pressure resulted in 15 total steals. Leading 32-20 in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks put the game on ice in the final two minutes.

Deidre Cheremound topped the Seahawks with 16 points an six rebounds. Crystal Mendoza added 10 points.

The win extended the Seahawks (21-7) season to the regional semifinal round on Tuesday against Clearwater.

Softball

Bishop Verot 4, Barron Collier 0: Bishop Verot shut out Barron Collier behind the one-hit pitching of junior Nicole Rodriguez, who recorded 14 strikeouts.

The Vikings (2-0) scored early in the second inning on a passed ball to go up 1-0. In the 6th, Verot added an additional run when Erin Kyle was walked with bases loaded. The next batter Tayli Filla capped off the scoring when she hit a two-run double with bases loaded.

Mariner 1, Riverdale 0: Anna Holloway allowed two hits and struck out nine in pitching Mariner to a shutout victory over Riverdale Thursday night.

Madison James’ RBI double in the sixth inning produced the game-winning run for the Tritons (3-0). Abby Love, Jasmin O’Neil and Amanda Myers also had base hits for Mariner, which plays at North Fort Myers on Monday.

North Fort Myers 8, Estero 0: Five runs in the first three innings left no doubt as North cruised to a shutout victory over Estero Thursday night.

A two-run triple by Natavia Ellis and a groundout by Shelby Coyne ruled the Red Knights early. Emma Johnson kept Estero off the scoreboard of five innings, tossing a five-hit shutout with three strikeouts.
