Region 3A-4: Immokalee didn’t get off to the fastest start in its regional quarterfinal bout with Mariner Thursday night. They’ll certainly take the end result.

Falling behind 1-0 on a brilliant goal by Mariner star Erick Rivera, the Indians bounced back for a 2-1 victory. Immokalee (18-5-2) advances to the regional semifinals Tuesday, where it plays the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal match between Golden Gate and Cape Coral, a match postponed a day by Thursday’s rain.

Raymond Cervantes’ penalty kick with 15:17 remaining in the first half certainly energized the Indians and seemed to deflate the Tritons (14-10-4), who controlled the action early in the game.

“Our defender went in and he stood there, and the kid ran into him, at least that’s what it looked like to me,” said Mariner coach Martin Cardenas. “He called a penalty kick, he’s the guy with the whistle. It’s a judgement call and he made that judgement. I’m not sure (the referees) saw everything correctly but that’s part of the game. We knew coming into the game that they were very good at drawing fouls. We just don’t have that experience on our squad (to recognize that.)”

The Indians were the clear aggressor in the second half, using their speed and athleticism to create multiple opportunities.

Junior Jonas Jean Charles capitalized on one of those chances, getting a beautiful feed from teammate Carlos Trigueros and fired a shot into the right corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.

“I was lined up around the 20 (yard-line). I saw that last defender and made a run at it,” Jean Charles said. “Thank God my teammate Carlos (saw) me and gave me a good ball. I just cut to my favorite right foot and placed in that back corner (of the net).”

Cardenas wasn’t distraught about the loss, noting Immokalee is a very talented team and cited the youth of his squad.

“I thought the game was a lot closer than we first thought it could be,” Cardenas said. “A little disappointed? Yes, but happy about what we accomplished this year.”
