FGCU women win eighth straight
FGCU extended its winning streak to eight straight games Monday night by crushing NJIT 70-37 at Alico Arena to remain unbeaten in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Concluding a six-game homestand, the Eagles travel to Tennessee and Georgia in the coming week. They visit Lipscomb in Nashville Saturday afternoon and travel to Kennesaw State on Monday.
Nine different players scored for the Eagles (15-4, 3-0 conference), led by Kaneisha Atwater with 20 points. Whitney Knight added 12 points and seven rebounds and Katie Meador contributed a season-best 10 points.
The Eagles produced two separate bursts in the first quarter to take a double-figure lead in the first 10 minutes and consistently increased the advantage through the remaining three quarters. A season-high 14 3-pointers pushed the lead to a game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter.
“NJIT came out and played a very active zone against us,” explained Eagles coach Karl Smesko. “We were trying to work on our ball movement and create as many open shots as we could. I thought our defense was really good in the first half and I thought our offense was the best in the third quarter. Overall, I thought it was a really good effort. We took care of the ball and we made more defensive play so there’s things to be encouraged about tonight.”
