Cape, Mariner advance in 3A-13 soccer
Two of the top three seeded teams in the District 3A-13 Tournament advanced with first-round victories on Monday at Mariner. It was No. 2 seed Port Charlotte that suffered the upset.
Cape Coral and Mariner both advanced with shutout wins while No. 7 seed Island Coast pulled off the upset of Port Charlotte 1-0 in overtime in the tournament’s first game. It is just the second win of the season for Island Coast.
All four games were shutouts on Monday. North Fort Myers blanked Lemon Bay 2-0, Cape Coral shut out Dunbar 5-0 and Mariner concluded the four-game day with a 2-0 win over Cypress Lake.
In Wednesday’s semifinal round, No. 1 Cape Coral takes on No. 4 North Fort Myers at 5 p.m. followed by Island Coast and No. 3 seed Mariner at 7 p.m.
Cape Coral 5, Dunbar 0: Jonathan Jimenez and Camilo Avendano scored two goals apiece in leading the Seahawks (18-2) to victory.
Daniel Medina added the fifth goal with goalkeepers Steven Patina faced no shots on goal and Antonio Garcia had one save in the final 20 minutes.
Mateo Arango was credited with two assists while Christian Iturbe and Avendano each had one assist.
Mariner 2, Cypress Lake 0: Eric Rivera and Pedro Reyes scored goals in the second half to lead the Tritons (12-8-4) into the semifinals. Goalkeeper Mason Eicher recorded six saves.
Island Coast 1, Port Charlotte 0 (OT): Miguel Vidal beat Port Charlotte’s goalkeeper one-on-one with an angle shot in overtime Monday as No. 7 seeded Gators upset the No. 2 seed Pirates in the District 3A-13 tournament opener at Mariner.
The winning score started with a throw-in. Alex France passed the ball forward to Vidal, who beat the keeper as he advanced toward the ball. The Gators (2-11-4) play the Mariner-Cypress Lake winner in Wednesday’s semifinals.
