Tritons post 18th win at Keller Classic
Mariner took advantage of one of its few scoring opportunities on the night Saturday, converting a close range goal by freshman Taylor Yount to claim the District 3A-13 girls’ soccer championship at North Fort Myers 1-0.
“We were outplayed soundly in the first half, but we kind of played them even in the second,” said Tritons coach Jefferson Swift. “We got a sound defensive effort in the middle from Julissa Thimelis and Sophia Restrepo.”
Sophomore Amanda Miller earned the assist on Yount’s game-winning goal that came on a counterattack before halftime.
Alex Restrepo finished with six saves tending net for the Tritons. Other than the goal, Coral Jarvis turned away the Tritons only other legitimate shot on goal with four minutes remaining in the game.
“I think we won the number of possessions, but the soccer gods were not in our favor tonight,” said Red Knights coach Nick Erickson. “It was like the first game we played Mariner and the Naples playoff game last year. We didn’t convert anything on I believe about 15 chances in the box.”
The Red Knights (18-3-1) travel to Barron Collier for Thursday’s Region 3A-4 quarterfinal round. Mariner (18-2-3) hosts Naples in the other quarterfinal match Thursday.
District 2A-12: Every time Bishop Verot took a one-goal lead, Oasis countered with one of their own Saturday afternoon at Vikings Stadium. Except, Reilly McAloose’s 35-yard direct kick just two minutes into the second overtime found the back of the net to bring the Vikings’ 3-2 victory to a conclusion.
Verot led 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by Maddie Sarnac, the latter score coming with five minutes remaining in regulation time. Since Oasis answered with its goal, the teams went through one overtime and into the second before deciding the outcome.
Bryde Camron was credited with five saves for the Vikings (13-8-1), who host DeSoto County on Thursday in the Region 2A-3 quarterfinal round. Oasis advances as district runner-up and travels to Sarasota to take on Cardinal Mooney in the quarterfinal round.
Boys Basketball
Mariner 72, North Port 59: Mariner kept its unblemished season in tact Saturday with a victory over North Port in the Wally Keller Classic at Charlotte.
Jahmel Myers led the Tritons with a team-high 19 points. He was backed by Isaiah Darrett’s double-double contribution of 11 points and 11 rebounds and Brandon Kostyk’s 13 points.
“I though not playing for a week would be a problem, but we got out to a 7-0 start,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “There was no flow to the back-and-forth game because there were 67 free throws taken. I have to credit our guys for hitting their free throws to get a hard fought win.”
The Tritons (18-0) play at Cypress Lake on Tuesday in their last district game of the regular season.
“I think we played championship basketball for 28 minutes, but we let down a bit in the last four minutes to let them back in,” said Harris.
