Gators win at Keller Classic
Friday’s severe storm cancelled or postponed high school sports, but Island Coast got permission through Charlotte High to play their game in the Wally Keller Classic.
The Gators came away with a positive experience and a 61-51 victory over Weathersfield (Ill.). The Gators evened their season record at 11-11 heading into the final weeks of the season, including Tuesday’s visit to North Fort Myers.
“It was nice to play an out-of-state team,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “They were 14-3, but we played hard, executed and led by 10 to 15 points most of the way.”
Craig Sirmons led the Gators with 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Justin Moore added 12 points and seven rebounds while Austin Grimm chipped in 11 points and seven assists. Simons also was chosen as the player of the game.
No other Lee County basketball team played Friday night. Mariner takes on North Port Saturday in the Wally Keller Classic at Charlotte.
Girls’ district soccer championship games were rescheduled for Saturday involving Mariner at North Fort Myers.
Gulf Coast overcame a two-goal deficit in the second half to upend Ida Baker in the District 4A-12 championship in Naples. Gulf Coast converted two penalty kicks to take the lead for good and earn its second straight district championship.
Haley Rounsifer accounted for both of the goals for the Bulldogs (17-7-1), who travel to Bradenton to take on Braden River next Thursday in the Region 4A-3 quarterfinals. Gulf Coast (18-4-1) will host North Port.
