Immokalee shocks Cape 1-0
Cape Coral’s 13-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night in the Seahawks’ final regular season game at Immokalee, a 1-0 shocker.
“We gambled in the second half and applied more pressure. It was an exciting finish,” said Seahawks coach Aldo Nardiello. “We missed on a couple of chances in the second half and had two corker kicks hit the crossbar.”
Immokalee scored near the end of the first half and held off the Seahawks through the final 40-plus minutes. The Seahawks’ first loss of the season came on Nov. 14 at Tampa Jesuit before 13 straight wins leading to Thursday’s defeat.
Goalkeeper Kyal Webber was credited with seven saves. The No. 1 seeded Seahawks (17-2) prepare for Monday’s District 3A-13 Tournament at Mariner when they face No. 8 Dunbar at 5 p.m. The semifinals are Wednesday with the championship match on Friday.
Mariner 4, Estero 0: A score that was ruled an own-goal in the first half with all seniors on the field was all Mariner needed Thursday night en route to a shutout win on senior night at Tony McKenna Field.
The second half got more underclassmen playing time that resulted in three more insurance goals. Eric Rivera, freshman Pedro Reyes and junior Joseph Nizama added goals in the second half. Goalkeeper Robert Quintanilla was credited with 10 saves in the shutout win. Reiner Valdez had two assists and Joey Lane one.
