Island Coast rolls past Lemon Bay 75-65
Island Coast continues to rebound from a seven-game losing streak spanning the Christmas break with a 75-65 District 6A-10 win Tuesday night at Lemon Bay.
The Gators (10-11) got balanced scoring from four players scoring in double figures, led by Kory Curtis with 17 points and eight rebounds. Craig Sirmons came through with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to go with a well-rounded four assists and three steals. Emerson Lagrace contributed 13 points, six rebounds, while Sam Merchant added 10 points, six rebounds.
“We led by as much as 18 points in the fourth quarter before Charlotte used free throws to keep the score close.
“We did a good job on offense with the balanced scoring, but we gave up 28 points in the fourth quarter,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “We kind of put it on cruise control, but I was pleased with our offense tonight.”
The Gators (6-4 district) play Wethersfield (Ill.) at 9 p.m. Friday in the Wally Keller Classic at Charlotte.
South Fort Myers 65, Cape Coral 58: Cape Coral squandered an 11 point halftime lead in the second half Tuesday night in a loss at South Fort Myers.
Stephen Hawkins and Brandon Alcide led the Seahawks with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
“South outplayed us in the second half and took a total of 33 free throws to just 13 for us,” said Seahawks coach Brandon Sensor.
The Seahawks (11-8) host Charlotte in a district matchup on Thursday.
Bishop Verot 57, Oasis 51: Austin Mosbach topped Verot scorers with 14 points in leading Tuesday’s win over Oasis.
Jack Archambault and Ben Fullencamp each chipped in with 13 points for the Vikings (7-11), who travel to Dunbar on Wednesday.
Brandon Watts and Owen Roos led the Sharks with 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Girls Soccer
Ida Baker 5, Riverdale 0: Haley Rounsifer scored three goals to lead Baker’s victory in the District 4A-12 Tournament Tuesday night and broke the school’s single season scoring record with her 40th goal. The record was held by Monique Elliott (37) achieved in the Bulldogs’ 2012 state championship season.
Marcela Montoya added the Bulldogs’ other two goals in the shutout win, posted by goalkeeper Acelya Aydogmus making four saves. The Bulldogs (16-5-1) advance to the district semifinal round against Tuesday’s winner between Estero and Lehigh on Wednesday.
