Mariner, North advance in District 3A-13
Mariner and North Fort Myers, the top two seeds in the District 3A-13 girls’ soccer tournament, advanced to the semifinal round with mercy-rule victories on Monday at North High.
The No. 1 Tritons dispatched No. 8 seed Dunbar 9-0 while No. 2 seed North eliminated 7th-seeded Island Coast 8-0.
Taylor Kruse led the Red Knights (16-2-1) with three goals with Amanda DaSilva adding a pair of scores. Gabby Ciancimino, Madison lampoons and Kayla Archer each added a goal while Morgan Augustine had one save tending goal.
Port Charlotte knocked off Cape Coral 2-1 and Lemon Bay dispatched Cypress Lake 3-0 with all of the Manta Rays’ goals coming in the game’s final 11 minutes.
The Red Knights face Lemon Bay in the semifinals on Wednesday at North High, followed by Mariner and Port Charlotte at 7 p.m. The championship game is slated for Friday at North.
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 5, Fort Myers 2: Haris Muhic scored two goals to lead the Seahawks to victory Monday backed by two goals by Jonathan Jimenez.
Austin Sweesy added a goal while Camilo Avendano assisted on two of the scores. Christopher Iturbe and Mateo Arango also had assists. Kyal Weber was credited with nine saves in goal for the Seahawks (17-1), who play at Immokalee on Thursday.
Boys Basketball
Bishop Verot 45, Canterbury 38: Verot’s Austin Mosbach and Canterbury’s Eddie Zurita led their respective teams with 20 points on Monday.
The Vikings (6-11), who led most of the way in a close game, hosts Oasis on Tuesday.
