Tritons win in double overtime 57-54
Mariner battled back from a first-half deficit to beat Tampa Chamberlain 57-54 in double overtime Saturday night in the St. Petersburg Shootout and keep its perfect season unblemished.
Amari Haynes led the Tritons with a double-double performance of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jahmel Myers backed him up with 12 points and three rebounds while Isaiah Darrett pulled down eight boards.
“We did a good job to battle back in the second half,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “We started to play with a purpose. It was a good back-and-forth game where both teams played well. We had to buckle down on defense and get some stops at the end.”
The Tritons (17-0) play their final district game on Tuesday at Cypress Lake.
Island Coast 62, Dunbar 49: Craig Sirmons and Kory Curtis turned in double-double efforts Saturday night in leading Island Coast to victory at Dunbar.
The win halts the Gators’ seven-game losing streak that began before Christmas.
Simons pitched in a game-high 25 points to go with 12 rebounds and three steals while Curtis added 13 points and 10 rebounds with four assists. Austin Grimm had a well rounded game with six points, seven assists and four steals.
“We changed our defense to a half-court trap in the second half to force some turnovers,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman.
The Gators trailed by 12 points at the half, 30-18, to take the lead at the end of the third quarter by taking advantage of Dunbar turnovers. They outscored the Tigers 44-19 in the second half to claim the win.
The Gators (9-11) play at Lemon Bay on Tuesday.
