Mariner survives shooting woes, tops Dunbar

Undefeated Mariner survived a poor shooting effort on senior night on Friday to beat back Dunbar 49-29.

“It wasn’t pretty,” said Trigons coach James Harris. “I guess an ugly win is better than a loss. The distractions for seniors’ high school career coming to an end didn’t help us, but we did a good job of picking each other up.”

Jahmel Myers and Amari Haynes led the Tritons with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Haynes grabbed six rebounds and Myers five to lead the way.

The Tritons (16-0, 7-0 district) put their season record on the line Saturday against Tampa Chamberlain in the St. Petersburg Shootout.

Cape Coral 78, Island Coast 67: Three Seahawks scored in double figures Friday night in leading Cape to victory at crosstown rival Island Coast.

C.J. Lewis paced the Seahawks with 20 points with Brandon Alcide adding 15 points to go with seven assists and four steals. Stephen Hawkins added 11 points while Keyshawn McCoy added nine points and five steals and Luis Calderon had a team-high nine rebounds.

Craig Sirmons topped all scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds for the Gators with Sam Merchant adding 11 points.

The Seahawks (11-7) play at South Fort Myers on Tuesday while the Gators play at Dunbar (8-11) on Saturday.

Boys Soccer

Cape Coral 3, Ida Baker 0: Camilo Avendano, Angel Arango and Andre Blanco scored goals to lead Cape Coral’s senior night victory over crosstown rival Ida Baker.

Kayla Weber had one save in goal and Steven Patino three to preserve the shutout. The Seahawks (16-1) travel to Fort Myers on Monday.

Despot County 3, Mariner 2: A game-winning goal by DeSoto with about seven minutes remaining Friday night snapped a 2-2 tie that handed Mariner the defeat.

Marvin Avilez and Erick Rivera scored first half goals that gave the Tritons an 2-2 tie at halftime.

“We had three or four scoring opportunities at the end that we couldn’t convert,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas.

The Tritons (10-8-4) host Estero next Thursday.

Girls Basketball

Ida Baker 38, North Fort Myers 31: Bre Kelly’s game-high 21 points led Baker to just its this win of the season Friday night over North. The Bulldogs (3-13) play at Charlotte on Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

North Fort Myers 8, Lehigh 0: Taylor Kruse and Gabby Ciancimino scored two goals apiece Friday night to lead North’s victory over Lehigh on senior night. The senior class thus became the winningest class in school history with 69 total wins.

Goalkeeper Coral Jarvis did not make a save in the mercy-rule win, but posted her career-high 24th shutout for the Red Knights (15-2-1), who take on Palmetto Ridge at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the District 4A-12 Tournament.

Ida Baker 8, Cape Coral 0: Four goals by Haley Rounsifer was more than enough Friday night to carry Baker to a shutout victory over Cape High.

Syniah Clark, Marcela Montoya, Jenny Schechter and Acelya Aydogmous each contributed one goal for the Bulldogs (15-5-1), who host Riverdale on Tuesday in the District 4A-12 Tournament.

Bishop Verot 8, South Fort Myers 0: Nina Gulati tallied three goals and Reilly McAloose two Friday night to lead Bishop Verot to a senior night triumph over South Fort Myers.

Maddie Sarnac, Elena Quinonez and Lauren Lockard each added single goals for the Vikings. Lander Peck contributed to the win with three assists. Goalkeeper Julia Flynn did not have to make a single save to preserve the shutout.

The Vikings (11-8-1) play the winner between LaBelle and Gateway Charter Wednesday in the district tournament at Clewiston.
