Tritons conquer Lightning 5-2
Erick Rivera and Joseph Nizama each scored two goals and assisted on two others Thursday night in leading Mariner to a 5-2 victory over Lehigh.
The Tritons grabbed a 2-0 lead by halftime which left the victory in the hands of goalkeepers Mason Eicher (2 saves) and Robert Quintanilla, who saved three shots while surrendering Lehigh’s two goals in the second half. Marvin Avilez added the fifth Tritons goal.
The Tritons (10-7-4) travel to DeSoto County on Friday to play their fourth match of the week.
Boys Basketball
Cape Coral 66, Cypress Lake 47: By the time Cape Coral opened a 20-point lead on Cypress Lake, the outcome was sealed Thursday night.
Brandon Alcide led the Seahawks with 13 points, one of three double-figure scorers/ C/J. Lewis added 11 points and five assists while Stephen Hawkins contributed 12 points. Luis Calderon grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with eight points.
The Seahawks (10-7) visit city rival Island Coast on Friday.
Bishop Verot 49, Gateway Charter 39: The Vikings claimed their second victory in a row this week with a 10-point win Thursday at Gateway Charter.
Austin Mosbach led the Vikings with a game-high 17 points with teammate Luke Lanman contributing a team-high 15 rebounds.
Givens Thegu topped Gateway with 16 points.
The Vikings (5-10) host LaBelle on Saturday.
Football
Ida Baker: Two Bulldogs players were honored earlier this week by being selected to the Florida Class 6A All-State football squad.
Senior Rasheed Golden, 5-10, 160 pounds, made the first-team defense while senior lineman Kaya Aydogmus, 6-3, 275, made the second-team offense.
The Bulldogs finished the season 4-6 and had their streak of consecutive playoff appearances end at two seasons.
Bishop Verot: Two Vikings sophomores earned Class 4A All-State honors this week.
Runningback William Scott (5-11, 180) made second-team offense while defensive back Devin Thompkins (5-7, 150) made second-team defense.
The Vikings went 8-3 on the season and was district runner-up with a 5-1 record. Their season ended in a 49-12 loss in the first round of the regional playoffs for the third straight season.
