Mariner remains unbeaten, wins Tritons Shootout

Mariner kept its unbeaten streak intact through the Tritons Shootout over the weekend, downing SWF Christian 65-42 Saturday night in the final game at Frank Morris Memorial Gymnasium.

Brandon Kostyk drained six 3-point goals to lead the Tritons’ victory with 18 points. Jamel Myers and Isaiah Darrett contributed double-double performances to back Koltyk. Myers contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds while Darrett hit for 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“We were up by eight at the half and had a good third quarter where we shot well,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “We stretched it out in the third quarter and beyond.”

In other games Saturday Port Charlotte prevailed over South Fort Myers 59-49 while Dunbar downed Estero 53-43 and Lakewood Ranch pummeled LaBelle 80-61.

The Tritons (13-0) celebrate the holiday break before participating in the Venice Beach Bash on Jan. 2, opening against Palmetto.

Mariner 65, LaBelle 45: Isaiah Darrett and Collin Chisholm led the Tritons to victory Friday night over LaBelle in the first round of the Tritons Shootout.

Darrett knocked in 14 points with Chisholm adding 12. Trenton Ferrara grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for the Tritons (12-0).

SWF Christian defeated Dunbar 66-50 in the opening game followed by First Baptist’s 74-38 rout of Estero.

Fort Myers 87, Island Coast 71: Island Coast had no defensive answer to counter Connor Jenkins, who led Fort Myers to victory with a game-high 42 points Friday night.

Sam Merchant did his part for the Gators with a double-double effort of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Craig Sirmons chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Gators (8-5) participate in the three-day Big 8 Holiday Classic at Ocoee before New Year’s.

Island Caost 81, Ida Baker 70: Island Coast prevailed in a shootout with Ida Baker Thursday night.

Sam Merchant won the high-scoring battle with 34 points for the Gators against Corey Friar’s 32 points for the Bulldogs.

Craig Sirmons backed Merchant with 19 points and Smith Joseph led the team in rebounding with 10 to go with four assists. Devin Hanley chipped in 15 points for the Bulldogs (4-8, 2-5 district).

Mariner 68, North Fort Myers 51: Mariner jumped out to a 13-point lead at halftime and held off North Fort Myers Thursday night.

Tyrell Smith topped the Tritons with 16 points followed by Amari Haynes with 15 and Dominique Carpenter 14. Haynes also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Cape Coral 73, Gateway Charter 57: Cape Coral led start to finish Thursday night en route to a 16-point victory at Gateway.

Brandon Alcide led the Seahawks (7-4) with 15 points with C.J. Lewis adding 11. Cam’ron Blissett chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.

Tritons Holiday Tournament: Lely claimed the championships Satur-day in the two-day Tritons Holiday Tournament at Mariner.

Lely defeated Immok-alee 5-2 in the championship game after knocking off Riverdale 9-2 in the first round and LaBelle 4-3 in the semifinals to reach the title match.

Baker took 5th place with a 1-0 win over Cypress Lake Saturday. The Bulldogs (7-9-2) lost their opener 4-0 to LaBelle, but bounced back to shut out Riverdale 8-0 in the consolation round to advance to the 5th place match.

Bulldogs goalkeeper Alex Buntrock was credited with f total of seven saves while posting two shutouts.

Cape Coral 1, Bishop Verot 0: Cape Coral continued its winning ways on the soccer pitch, claiming a 1-0 victory Friday night over Bishop Verot.

The Seahawks got the game-winning goal in the game’s first 10 minutes when Camilo Avendano sent a corner kick in front of the goal where Haris Muhic directed it to the back of the net. Goalkeeper Kyal Weber made five saves to record the shutout.

The Seahawks (14-1, 6-0 district) play their final district match on Jan. 5 at Cypress Lake.

South Fort Myers 1, Ida Baker 0: South Fort Myers broke the scoreless tie with just three minutes left in regulation time Thursday night to clip Baker (5-8-2). It was the Wolfpack’s first and only shot on goal.

Tritons Holiday Tournament: American Heri-tage claimed the championships Saturday in the two-day Tritons Holiday Tournament at Mariner.

Heritage beat Cypress Lake 9-1 in the first round and tied with host Mariner 1-1 in the semifinals, but advanced to the title match on tiebreaker PKs 4-2. Heritage blanked Riverdale 3-0 in Saturday’s finale.

Ida Baker placed third with a 2-1 win over Mariner. Baker beat Lemon Bay 4-2 in the first round and tied Riverdale 3-3 in the semifinals with Riverdale advancing to the title match on tiebreaker PKs 4-3.

Cape Coral 2, Clewiston 2 (tie): Cape Coral had a victory snatched from its grasp Friday night when Clewiston scored a late goal to force a tie.

Rhea Schott and Jamie Awizsus scored the two goals for the Seahawks while goalkeeper Blaire Dupuy was credited with eight saves.

The Seahawks (7-7-1) host Oasis on Jan. 5.

Ida Baker 1, South Fort Myers 0: Marcella Montoya’s penalty kick goal 10 minutes into the second half was the difference Thursday night as Baker held off South Fort Myers.

The Bulldogs (11-5-1, 5-3 district) outshot the Wolfpack 30-1, but only got the one goal.

Bishop Verot 3, Oasis 3 (tie): Oasis scored the tying goal with four minutes remaining Thursday night to force a tie with Bishop Verot.

Nina Gulati, maddie Sarnac and Reilly McAloose accounted for the Vikings’ goals with goalkeeper Bridget Linden credited with three saves.

The win earns Verot (9-6-1, 6-0-1 district) the top seed for the upcoming district tournament. The Vikings are idle until Jan. 4.

Island Coast 39, Ida Baker 24: Baker couldn’t keep up with Island Coast Thursday night as the Bulldogs slipped to 2-12 on the season. They are idle now until Jan. 5.
