Baker, Oasis face off for 3rd at Santa Slam

Ida Baker and host Oasis both split two games in the first two rounds of the Santa Slam Tournament at Oasis Monday and will play each other for third place at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Canterbury takes on Pahokee at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for the championship.

Oasis defeated Donahue Academy 70-54 in the opening game Monday, led by Owen Roos and Kyle Erdner with double-double performances. Roos struck for 20 points and 12 rebounds while Erdner added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Marian Kola chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.

The win sent the Sharks to the semifinal round against Canterbury, where they lost a tight one 53-51 that bounced Oasis to the third-place game. Brandon Watts led the Sharks with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, backed by Kylar Frias with 13 points and freshman Trent Raymond with eight points and five rebounds. Raymond won the 3-point shooting contest by hitting 19 threes in one minute, more than double his championship challenger.

Baker edged First Baptist Academy 72-69 in the first round, led by Corey Friar with 25 points and Devin Hanley with 20. The Bulldogs lost their semifinal match to Pahokee 67-55 with Friar knocking down 17 points and Ronny Calderon 13. That put the Bulldogs into the third place game against Oasis.

Greater Miami and Donahue play for seventh place at 10 a.m., followed by St. Pete Canterbury and First Baptist playing for fifth place at 11:30.
