Cape High girls basketball team wins 12th straight
For the second time in three years the Cape Coral girls’ basketball team has started the season 12-0. The Seahawks are hoping the 2015 season goes better for them than 2013 when they lost game No. 13 en route to a 25-2 campaign.
The Seahawks reached that mark Tuesday night with a resounding 60-18 defeat of North Fort Myers. Their next opponent is Fort Myers on Thursday at The Nest.
Katara Gaymon led the Seahawks with 14 points with Allie Fornal chipping in with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
East Lee County 53, Ida Baker 21: Baker could not sustain its one-game winning streak, falling to East Lee County Tuesday night to slip to 2-11 on the season heading into Thursday’s home game against Island Coast.
Boys Basketball
Cape Coral 69, North Fort Myers 60: Cape Coral had four players reach double figures in scoring Tuesday night in a nine-point decision over North Fort Myers.
Brandon Alcide led the Seahawks quartet with 13 points. C.J. Lewis added 12 points while Alex Hyppolite and Stephen Hawkins each contributed 10 points. Bryan Malkovich just missed double figures with eight points, but led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Seahawks (6-4, 3-3 district) pulled out to a 16-point lead in the second half and held off the Red Knights’ late charge. Cape travels to Gateway Charter on Thursday.
Charlotte 90, Island Coast 71: Sam Merchant struck for 28 points to lead Island Coast’s losing effort Tuesday night at Charlotte.
Craig Sirmons pitched in 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Smith Joseph added nine points to go with five assists and six rebounds. Merchant finished with eight boards.
“We came out flat and got behind 50-24 in the first half,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “We got it back to within 15 points when we finally woke up, but Charlotte drained 12 3-pointers on the night.”
The Gators (7-4, 4-2 district) host Ida Baker on Thursday.
Oasis 61, Gateway Charter 52: Senior Owen Roos pitched in a game-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists Tuesday night to lead Oasis to a district victory over Gateway Charter.
Roos was backed by Brandon Watts with a double-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds, Marian Kola with 13 points, five rebounds.
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 4, Dunbar 0: Four different players scored goals Tuesday night in Cape Coral’s shutout victory over Dunbar.
Angel Arango, Jonathan Torres, Camilo Avendano and Andre Blanco tallied goals while Blanco was credited with two assists. Christopher Iturbe and Mateo Arango also got assists. Goalkeepers Kyal Weber and Steven Patino each made one save.
The Seahawks (12-1, 6-0 district) host South Fort Myers on Wednesday.
Girls Soccer
Mariner 3, North Fort Myers 1: It just wasn’t North Fort Myers’ night in a loss at Mariner Tuesday.
“The ball just bounced their way tonight,” said Red Knights coach Nick Erickson. “We would have won the LCAC with a win tonight, but it looks like Mariner will now win it.”
Freshman Taylor Yount scored on a 30-plus yard free kick that caromed off the hand of North’s keeper for the first goal. Sophomores Taylor Jewett and Julissa Chimelis also added goals for the Tritons (12-1-2), who host the Tritons Holiday Tournament Friday and Saturday.
“We were outplayed a good portion of the game,” said Tritons coach Jefferson Swift.
Goalkeeper Alexis Restrepo made nine saves to secure the win.
Tori Kowalczyk scored North’s lone goal in the second half, trimming the margin to 2-1 at the time.
North (12-2-1) plays in a shootout at Estero on Thursday and Friday, kicking off against Community School of Naples followed by Venice.
Cape Coral 8, Dunbar 0: Sarah Magin’s four goals propelled Cape Coral to a lopsided victory Tuesday night at Dunbar.
Cheyenne Young, Kelsey Miskimins, Nicole Ramos and JamieAwiszus accounted for the remaining goals. The Seahawks (6-7) host Cypress Lake on Thursday.
