Iturbe leads Seahawks’ latest shutout win
Christian Iturbe scored three goals, including two penalty kicks, Thursday night to lead Cape Coral to an 8-0 mercy-rule victory at Lehigh.
Daniel Medina and Jose Parra each contributed two goals with Hunter Gerrero tacking on one goal. Leading 3-0 at the half, the Seahawks poured it on in the second half to end the match early in the 70th minute.
The win extends the Seahawks’ season record to 10-1, 5-0 District 6A-10. Goalkeeper Steven Patino was credited with six saves.
The Seahawks host Barron Collier on Friday.
Boys Basketball
Island Coast 66, Cypress Lake 55: Craig Sirmons picked up the slack for Sam Merchant, who was benched for an undisclosed infraction, by scoring 29 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in leading Island Coast’s victory at Cypress Lake Thursday night.
The teams battled for control of the momentum throughout the first half before the Gators began to pull away in the second half by playing better defense.
Austin Grimm chipped in with 14 points and three steals while Kory Curtis contributed eight points and six assists.
The Gators (6-3) host North Fort Myers in a District 6A-10 contest on Friday.
Oasis 51, Bishop Verot 50: Oasis nailed down its first district victory Thursday night with a home court victory over Bishop Verot.
Tied 40-40 heading into the fourth quarter, the Sharks seized the opportunity that had presented itself. Freshman Kylar Frias hit a 3-point shot with 12 seconds left to account for the game-winning points.
Brandon Watts led the Sharks with 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Fries finished with 12 points and seven assists while Kyle Erdner contributed six steals and five rebounds. Marian Kola added nine points, five assists.
Luke Lannon led the Vikings with 13 points.
The Sharks visit Cypress Lake on Monday.
Girls Basketball
Cape Coral 53, East Lee County 19: Cape Coral coasted to victory Thursday night behind Meka Sillevis, who topped the balanced Seahawks offense with 12 points.
Allie Fornal pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Seahawks (9-0), who travel to Port Charlotte on Friday for a District 6A-10 matchup.
Girls Soccer
Bishop Verot 8, Gateway Charter 0: Maddie Sarnac led Verot’s mercy-rule victory Thursday night with a five-goal performance.
Nina Gulati added two goals and two assists while Reilly McAloose and Eleana Quinonez accounted for the other two scores. McAloose also was credited with three assists. Goalkeeper Bridget Linden had no saves as the Vikings (9-6) roll into their next match on Thursday at Oasis.
