Cape boys soccer team wins ninth game, 8-0
Cape Coral continued its winning start to the soccer season Tuesday night by pinning an 8-0 defeat on District 6A-10 rival Port Charlotte.
Giani Cognata led the Seahawks with three goals and an assist with Kevin Rentana adding two goals. Angel Arango, Jonathan Jimenez and Camilo Avendano tacked on one goal apiece as the Seahawks (9-1, 5-0 district) scored the mercy-rule goal with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Goalkeeper Steven Patino made four saves to preserve the shutout. The Seahawks travel to Lehigh on Thursday.
Boys Basketball
Mariner 81, Cypress Lake 24: Collin Chisholm tallied a game-high 17 points Tuesday night to lead Mariner’s lopsided victory over Cypress Lake.
Chisholm was the only Tritons player to reach double figures as balanced scoring up and down the bench proved to be the difference. Mariner broke to a 30-point halftime advantage and coasted the rest of the way. The unbeaten Tritons converted 15 3-point goals to surge to their ninth victory of the season.
“It was a great team win,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “Everybody scored and contributed tonight. I’m proud of the way we played.”
The Tritons host Immokalee on Friday.
Bishop Verot 53, Gateway 40: Luke Lanman’s 23 points not only topped all scorers, but carried Bishop Verot to victory Tuesday night.
The Vikings (3-5) visit Oasis on Thursday for a district contest.
LaBelle 79, Oasis 35: LaBelle raced to a 17-point halftime advantage Tuesday night en route to victory over Oasis.
Owen Roos and Brandon Watts topped the Sharks in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jordan Lopez led the Cowboys with 20.
The Sharks host Bishop Verot on Thursday.
Girls Basketball
Cape Coral 49, Charlotte 39: Junior Deidre Cheremound gave a double-double performance Tuesday night to lead undefeated Cape Coral to a District 6A-10 victory over Charlotte.
Ceremound pumped in a game-high 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Seahawks with Meka Sillevis contributing eight points. The Seahawks (9-0) host East Lee County on Thursday.
Girls Soccer
Ida Baker 9, Lehigh 0: Marcela Montoya, Paxton Guerin and Haley Rounsifer scored multiple goals Tuesday night in leading Baker to a mercy-rule victory at Lehigh.
Montoya led the Bulldogs with three goals while Guerin and Rounsifer each tallied two scores. Roxie Fraser and April Sanchez accounted for the other two goals. The game ended with the first-half buzzer as Lehigh failed to get off a single shot on goal.
The Bulldogs (8-3-1) host Estero on Thursday.
North Fort Myers 3, Cypress Lake 0: North Fort Myers kept its winning ways intact Tuesday night with a shutout victory over Cypress Lake.
Michele Cohen led the Red Knights with two goals with Taylor Kruse adding one. Nicole Paquin assisted on two of the scores with goalkeeper Morgan Augustine making three saves. The Knights (9-1-1) play at Dunbar Wednesday to make up a match rained out earlier.
Bishop Verot 3, Clewiston 2: Three different players accounted for goals to lead Bishop Verot to a district victory Tuesday night at Lewiston.
Nina Gulati, Maddie Sarnac and Elana Quinonez scored one goal apiece with Gulati and Lander Peck each credited with an assist. Goalkeeper Bridget Linden preserved the win with four saves.
The Vikings (8-6) host Gateway Charter on Thursday.
