Friar’s record night earns Baker a victory
Corey Friar connected for a personal career and new school record 43 points Thursday night to lead Ida Baker to a 104-67 victory at Everglades City.
Friar, who added 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double, led a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Bulldogs. Najin Zoghbi contributed 13 points, Devin Hanley 12 and Robert Cobb 10 points as the Bulldogs posted just their second win of the season so far.
“Everybody scored for us and we kind of ran away with it in the second half by shooting 74 percent from the floor,” said Bulldogs coach Jay Sanderson.
The Bulldogs also converted 6-of-8 3-point shots for a 75 percent accuracy. The Bulldogs (2-4) travel to Charlotte Friday for a District 6A-10 match.
Girls Basketball
Ida Baker 55, Everglades City 33: Bre Kelly hit for a season high 22 points Thursday night to lead Baker to its first season victory at Everglades City. The Bulldogs (1-7) host Charlotte Friday in a District 6A-10 contest.
Cape Coral 54, Cypress Lake 41: Deidre Cheremound and Allie Fornal delivered double-double performances Thursday night in leading unbeaten Cape Coral to come-from-behind victory at Cypress Lake.
Ceremound led the Seahawks with 16 points and 13 rebounds while Fornal pitched in 10 points and 11 rebounds.
After a slow start the Seahawks rallied late in the game. The Panthers still lead by seven points in the third quarter when the Seahawks started their comeback.
The Seahawks (8-0) host Charlotte on Tuesday in a District 6A-10 contest.
Girls Soccer
Bishop Verot 3, Riverdale 1: Three different players scored goals in a pouring rain Thursday night as Verot downed Riverdale.
Lander Peck, Reilly McAloose and Maddie Sarnac found the back of the net for the Vikings, who led 2-0 at halftime. Goalkeeper Bridget Linden was credited with four saves while Peck also had two assists.
The Vikings (6-6) travel to Lehigh on Monday.
