Island Coast rallies past Cape High, 64-63
Craig Sirmons connected on the first of two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining Tuesday night to give Island Coast a 64-63 come-from-behind victory at Cape Coral.
The Gators trailed by 10 points with 6:23 left in the game, but rallied to take a one-point lead with two minutes to play. The lead bounced back and forth until Cape trailed by two with 22 seconds remained. Cape’s Luis Calderon converted two free throws to tie the game at 63-63 and Island Coast opted to hold the ball for the last shot. Simons was fouled driving to the basket and made the first free throw that proved to be the game-winning point.
“I called time out and told him to miss the second free throw on purpose,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “We got a hand on the rebound to knock it out of bounds and time ran out.”
Simons finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds to back Sam Merchant’s double-double effort of 33 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Gators. Steven Hawkins topped the Seahawks with 16 points with 13 points apiece by Keyshawn McCoy and Calderon.
The Gators started out slow, missed several layups in the early going, and trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half before cutting the deficit to four at the half, 33-29.
The Gators (3-3, 2-1 district) host Bishop Verot Wednesday night while Cape Coral (4-1) visits Mariner on Friday.
Mariner 56, Lely 46: Mariner pulled out a 10-point victory Tuesday night at Lely to remain unbeaten in district and regular season play. They take a 6-0 mark (2-0 district) into Friday’s annual rivalry match against crosstown rival Cape Coral.
Sean Kostyk pumped in a game-high 19 points to lead the Tritons with Amari Haynes contributing a team-high seven rebounds to go with nine points.
“We made plays like a championship team should at the end,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “We finished it at the free throw line.”
Ida Baker 48, North Fort Myers 41: Devin Hanley’s 27-point outburst led Baker to its first win of the season Tuesday night against North Fort Myers.
Hanley also grabbed eight rebounds to back teammate Corey Friar, who finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs (1-4) host Everglades City on Thursday.

Cape Coral 8, Lemon Bay 0: Gianni Cognata pumped in five goals to go with one assist Tuesday night to propel Cape Coral to a district shutout victory Tuesday night.
Mateo Arango, Camilo Avendano and Gio Caserio contributed one goal apiece. Caserio and Andre Blanco finished with two assists apiece. Goalkeepers Kyal Weber and Stephen Patino combined for five saves.
The Seahawks (8-1, 4-0 district) visit Cypress Lake for another district tilt on Thursday.
Girls Basketball
Mariner 35, Lely 14: Kristin Powell’s double-double performance helped lead Mariner to victory at Lely Tuesday night.
Powell connected for 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Kiera Bateman added nine points for the Tritons (2-8), who hosts Island Coast on Thursday.
Cape Coral 46, Island Coast 39: Deidra Cheremound delivered a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday night to keep Cape Coral unbeaten.
Meka Sillevis contributed eight points to the effort as the Seahawks (7-0) head to Thursday’s home game against Cypress Lake.
Girls Soccer
Mariner 8, Island Coast 0: Freshman Taylor Yount knocked in three goals and Julissa Chimelis two to lead Mariner’s mercy-rule victory Tuesday night.
Sophia Restrepo, Aryana Saenz and Hannah Theriault connected for one goal apiece while the Gators never got off a shot on goal before the mercy rule came into play early in the second half.
The Tritons (8-0-2) play at Fort Myers on Wednes-day.
Bishop Verot 5, Oasis 3: Maddie Sarnac led Verot with the most goals for the second game in a row with three goals Tuesday night in a win over Oasis.
Lander Peck chipped in with two goals and one assist with Nina Gulati and Elana Quinonez each contributed one assist. Goal-keeper Bryde Camron was credited with five saves.
The Vikings (5-6) host Riverdale on Thursday.
North Fort Myers 3, Port Charlotte 0: Taylor Kruse, Amanda Dasilva and Gabby Ciancimino each scored a goal Tuesday night in North’s shutout win.
Madison Lampkins contributed two assists while goalkeeper Coral Jarvis saved three shots to preserve the shutout. The Red Knights (9-1-1) visit Dunbar on Thursday.
Lemon Bay 3, Cape Coral 2: Leading 2-1 with four minutes remaining, Cape Coral gave up the tying goal and minutes later the controversial game-winning score Tuesday night at Lemon Bay.
Allyson Moss and Kelsey Miskimins got goals for the Seahawks while keeper Blaire Dupuy was credited with 23 saves. The Seahawks (3-6) host Cypress Lake on Thursday.
Ida Baker 5, Riverdale 2: Three goals by Haley Rounsifer were enough to deliver a victory Tuesday night for Ida Baker.
Roxie Fraser and Morgan Holbrook each contributed a goal with Fraser credited with three assists. Keeper Ashley Revis had five saves for the Bulldogs (7-3-1), who host Venice on Friday.
