Late run produces 62-54 win for Tritons
Mariner went on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes of Tuesday’s in-school game at Riverdale to earn a 62-54 victory.
Sean Kostyk led the Tritons in scoring with 16 points, including four of the eight points in the game-winning run at the end. The Tritons led most of the game and faced their stiffest challenge with the game tied 54-54 at the two-minute mark.
“Sean hit a key 3-pointer and a free throw for us,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “It was a good test for us today. River dale is very talented and they shot real well.”
Besides Kostyk, the Tritons got double-figure offense from Isaiah Darrett with 15 points and six assists, and 13 points and eight rebounds from Amari Haynes.
The Tritons (3-0) open play in Island Coast’s Turkey Shootout tournament against Naples at 1 p.m. Friday. They finish with a 5:30 game against Boca Ciega on Saturday.
Port Charlotte 63, Island Coast 58: Port Charlotte opened a 17-point lead in the second quarter Tuesday night and held off Island Coast’s comeback bid to record a victory.
“They beat North Port and Gulf Coast, two of the better teams in the area,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “We got back within 10 at the half and within three in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as we got.”
Sam Merchant scored 22 points to lead a trio of Gators offensively. He also grabbed eight rebounds and finished with four steals. Craig Sirmons added 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Kory Curtis had a team-high 10 rebounds to go with five assists and six points.
The Gators (2-1, 1-1 district) face South Fort Myers at 10 a.m. Friday in the first round of Island Coast’s Turkey Shootout tournament.
Cape Coral 56, Dunbar 54: A 3-point basket with just over a minute to play proved to be the game-winning points as Cape Coral edged Dunbar on Tuesday.
C.J. Lewis topped the Seahawks with 13 points while Luis Calderon added 12 points and grabbed five rebounds to match the rebounding of Harwin Francois.
The Seahawks (4-0) host Island Coast on Tuesday.

Cape Coral 2, LaBelle 1: Jose Parra’s goal in the second half broke a 1-1 tie and made a winner of Cape Coral at LaBelle on Tuesday.
Camilo Avendano assisted on both Seahawks goals, including the tying goal in the first half by Kevin Retana. Goalkeeper Stephen Patino was credited with seven saves in preserving the victory for the Seahawks (7-1), who host Lemon Bell on Tuesday in a District 6A-10 matchup.

Riverdale 58, Mariner 21: Riverdale started out in front and stayed there while coasting to a victory over Mariner (0-7), which takes on Barron Collier on Wednesday in the first round of the Bokamper’s Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout hosted by the Cougars.
Girls Soccer
North Fort Myers 1, South Fort Myers 0: The Red Knights got the game-winning goal with about 15 minutes left in the first half on an unasssisted shot by Taylor Kruse and held on to beat South Fort Myers.
North goalkeeper Coral Jarvis did not have a save in the game while preserving the shutout. The Knights (8-1-1) host Port Charlotte on Tuesday.
