Seahawk boys win district opener 81-59
Cape Coral, Mariner, Island Coast and Bishop Verot all posted victories in boys’ basketball action Thursday night.
Cape Coral made its District 6A-10 debut with an 81-59 triumph at Lemon Bay. The Seahawks got double figure scoring from Brandon Alcide with 17 points and Stephen Hankins with 15. Brian Markovich and Cam Blissett led the team in rebounding with four apiece.
The Seahawks (2-0, 1-0 district) visit district rival Ida Baker on Monday.
Island Coast 78, Ida Baker 55: Sam Merchant pumped in a game-high 34 points to go with 10 rebounds Thursday night to lead Island Coast’s District 6A-10 opening win at Baker.
Merchant was one of two double-double performers for the Gators. Craig Sirmons pitched in 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. Korey Curtis contributed 13 points and seven boards.
Baker was led by Corey Friar with 22 points and six rebounds while Ronny Calderon added nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs (0-2, 0-1) visit Riverdale on Friday. The Gators (2-0, 1-0) host Port Charlotte in a district match on Tuesday.
Mariner 69, East Lee County 30: Four players reached double figures in scoring to lead Mariner’s lopsided victory Thursday night.
Isaiah Darrett led the Tritons with 17 points with Amari Haynes contributed 12 points. Jamel Myers and Sean Kostyk each pitched in 11 points. Myers led in rebounding with eight with Darrett picking off five boards.
The Tritons (2-0) play a noon in-school game on Tuesday at Riverdale.
Bishop Verot 65, Marco Island 22: Bishop Verot outplayed Marco Island Thursday night behind the double-figure scoring of Austin Mosbach and Josh Schwartz.
Mosbach topped all scorers with 20 points and Schwartz added 10.
The win is the 300th for coach Matt Herting at Verot, who is just the second coach in Lee County to reach the mark at one school. The first was Cape High’s Dave Funk.
The Vikings (1-1) travel to St. John Neumann on Friday.
Girls Basketball
Cape Coral 57, Lemon Bay 19: Cape Coral posted its fourth win of the season on Thursday, thanks to a pair of 13-point scorers in Deidre Cheremound and Grace Waller.
Cheremound also grabbed a team-high 13 boards to give her a double-double. The Seahawks (4-0) visit Sarasota Christian on Friday.
Island Coast 40, Ida Baker 18: Ida Baker didn’t find its first victory of the season Thursday night in a rout at Island Coast.
Rose Cardona led the Bulldogs with eight points with another fame Friday at home against Riverdale.
Lehigh 77, Mariner 16: A full court press applied by Lehigh early in the game set the tone and led to Mariner’s lopsided loss Thursday night.
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 4, Island Coast 1: Four different players earned goals to carry Cape Coral to victory Thursday night at Island Coast.
The host Gators scored the game’s first goal, but the Seahawks answered without delay. Mateo Arango scored the first goal off an assist from Gianni Cognata before taking a 2-1 halftime lead on Austin Sweesy’s game-winning goal off Andre Blanco’s corner kick. Kevin Rentana and Cognata finished off the scoring in the second half. Cognate also had two assists in the match. Goalkeepers Kyal Weber had one save on two shots faced in the first half while Steven Patino added five saves in the second half.
The Seahawks (6-1, 3-0) visit LaBelle on Tuesday.
Mariner 5, Cypress Lake 1: Erick Rivera’s four goals were more than the Tritons would need Thursday night to take out Cypress Lake in a District 3A-13 match.
Joseph Nizama scored the Tritons’ other goal with Joey Lane, Pedro Reyes and Nizama each credited with an assist.
Goalkeeper Mason Eicher had five saves, sending the Tritons to Saturday’s match at Tampa Berkeley Prep with a 4-2 mark, 1-2 in district play.
Girls Soccer
North Fort Myers 4, Lemon Bay 0: Two goals each by Nicole Paquin and Tori Kowalczyk were all the Red Knights needed Thursday night to shut out District 3A-3 rival Lemon Bay.
Goalkeeper Morgan Augustine was credited with three saves as the Knights controlled the game, ball possession in their best win of the season.
The Knights (6-1-1, 2-0) host Fort Myers on Monday.
Bishop Verot 9, LaBelle 1: Reilly McAloose netted four goals with one assist Thursday night to lead Verot’s 45-minute District 2A-12 victory at LaBelle.
Lauren Lockard, Maddie Sarnac, Elena Quinonez, Lander Peck and Ditsy Bretton each added one goal to the rout.
Peck had two assists and goalkeeper Bridget Linden only had to make one save to preserve the win. The Vikings (3-4, 3-0) visit Mariner on Friday.
