Myers leads Mariner boys past Immokalee
Mariner took a long journey to begin the boys’ basketball season Tuesday night and had a happy bus ride home after defeating Immokalee 41-30.
Jamel Myers tallied a game-high 25 points to lead the Tritons to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Sean Kostyk contributed 11 points.
The Tritons opened a 32-18 lead in the first half and widened the lead down the stretch to not only record their first win of the season but their first district victory. The Tritons (1-0, 1-0 district) hosts East Lee County on Thursday in their home opener.
Cape Coral 81, Fort Myers 69: Four players reached double figures in scoring Tuesday night to lead Cape Coral to a season-opening victory.
Brandon Alcide led the Hawks with 19 points. Jonathan Moreno chipped in with 18 points while Keyshawn McCoy and Luis Calderon each contributed 11 points.
South Fort Myers 72, Ida Baker 57: South Fort Myers pulled away from Baker Tuesday night, handing the Bulldogs a season-opening defeat on their home floor.
Corey Friar topped the Bulldogs in scoring with 19 points with Devin Hanley close behind with 17 points. Both also pulled down eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs host Island Coast on Thursday.
East Lee County 65, North Fort Myers 62: North Fort Myers dropped a close game in its season opener Tuesday night, a game that came down to the free throw line at the end.
The Red Knights were led by a trio of performers, two of which turned in double-double efforts. Jordan Thomas led the way with 28 points and 12 rebounds, backed by John Chessrown with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon King chipped in with 17 points and four assists.
The Knights (0-1) play at Oasis on Monday.
Girls Basketball
Cape Coral 56, North Fort Myers 11: Deidre Cheremound tallied a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday night to lead Cape Coral’s victory at North Fort Myers.
Allie Fornal pitched in with nine points and four rebounds while Crystal Tisme added seven points. The Seahawks (3-0) host Lemon Bay on Thursday.
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 8, North Fort Myers 0: Cape Coral cruised past North Fort Myers Tuesday night on the strength of two goals apiece by Haris Muhic, Angel Arango and Kevin Retana Tuesday night.
Gianni Cognata and Andre Blanco finished out the Seahawks scoring with one goal apiece. Camilo Avendano wound up with three assists while goalkeeper Kyal Weber registered eight saves to post the shutout.
The Seahawks (5-1, 2-0 district) play at Island Coast on Thursday.
Port Charlotte 2, Mariner 1: Trailing 1-0 at halftime, freshman Marvin Avilez scored 10 minutes into the second half to bring Mariner back to a tie game only to have the Pirates net a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes for the game-winning goal Thursday night.
Goalkeeper Mason Eicher had five saves in the second half for the Tritons (3-2), who host Cypress Lake on Thursday.
Bishop Verot 1, Gateway Charter 0: Nathan Powers scored the game’s lone goal with about 15 minutes to play Thursday night off a free kick by teammate Logan McLeod to lift the Vikings to victory.
Goalkeeper Michael Hafele made four saves to preserve the shutout. The Vikings (1-1-1) host LaBelle on Thursday.

North Fort Myers 7, Cape Coral 1: Nicole Paquin led North Fort Myers to victory Tuesday night with a pair of goals in a lopsided win over Cape Coral.
Taylor Kruse, Tori Kowalczyk and Kelsey Peterson tacked on one goal apiece for the Red Knights (5-1-1), who travel to Lemon Bay on Thursday.
Abby Kohlmeier scored the lone goal for the Seahawks with keeper Blaire Dupuy credited with 20 saves. The Seahawks host Island Coast on Thursday.
