Gators open with rousing victory

Island Coast made its season debut Monday night with a smashing 82-42 victory on its home floor against Oasis.

Craig Sirmons led the Gators (1-0) with 24 points and six rebounds. He was backed by Sam merchant’s 14 points and eight rebounds with Austin Grimm adding 12 points and four assists. Kory Curtis set a new school record for assists in a single game with 12 to go with nine points.

The Gators led from the opening tip and converted 20 of 23 free throw attempts.

Owen Roos topped the Sharks (0-1) with 20 points.

The Gators visit Ida Baker for their first district game on Thursday. The Sharks (0-1) play at Canterbury on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

Island Coast 45, Oasis 25: Daria Aho’s 11 points led Oasis in Monday night’s 20-point loss to Island Coast.

Kelsi Arentsen contributed a team-high seven rebounds for the Sharks (0-1), who play at Canterbury on Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

Bishop Verot 8, Gateway 0: Bishop Verot netted its second district victory in as many matches Monday night with a mercy-rule win, led by Liv Miller’s four goals.

Lauren Lockard banged home two goals with Lander Peck and Reilly McAloose each tacking on one goal. McAloose and Lucia Spinelli each were credited with two assists while Lockard and Peck added one apiece. Goalkeeper Bryde Cameron made three saves to preserve the shutout.

The Vikings (2-4, 2-0 district) travel to LaBelle on Thursday.

Signings

Island Coast: Senior Anthony Churlin signed a college letter-of-intent Friday to play baseball at Central Florida.

Churlin, a four-year starting outfielder for the Gators, hit .430 with six doubles, two triples and three home runs last season.

Cape Coral: Three-sport athlete Makenzie Buss and swim team member Meagan Galbreath, both International Baccalaureate students, signed college letters-of-intent on Friday.

Buss earned varsity letters in volleyball, soccer and softball with the latter being her favorite sport. She will attend Jacksonville.

Galbreath earned multiple varsity letters and just recently captured the Florida State Championship in diving. She has earned district and regional championships in multiple years and placed second in the state last year as a junior. She will attend Harvard.

Bishop Verot: Two senior softball players signed national letters-of-intent Monday at Bishop Verot. Erin Kyle committed to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, while Jennie Boisvert signed on with Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.

Kyle is a four-year starting pitcher for the Vikings. She plans to study American Sign Language at Lamar.

Boisvert lettered four years as a catcher. Her goal is to earn degrees in exercise science and a Doctorate in physical therapy.
