FGCU men earn first win of season
FGCU chalked up its first victory of the season Monday night, led by Filip Cvjeticanin’s game- and career-high 18 points.
The Eagles (1-1) had five players in double figures and cruised to an 85-62 win over Texas Wesleyan at Alico Arena.
Marc-Eddy Norelia recorded his third career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Julian DeBose tallied 14 points, Antravious Simmons added 13 and Christian Terrell chipped in with 11 points as the Eagles shot 47.8 percent (33-69) from the floor.
The 23-point victory marks the fifth straight time the Eagles have bounced back from a season-opening loss to win by double figures in its next game. The win also extends FGCU’s mark at Alico Arena since 2012 to 44-8.
Despite a career-high 21 points by Norelia, and nine rebounds, the Eagles lost their season opener on Saturday at Ohio 85-75.
After playing two games in three days, the Eagles host the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic at Alico Arena where they will play three games in three nights starting Saturday.
Women’s Soccer: FGCU earned its first NCAA Tournament victory last Saturday with a 2-1 defeat of South Florida in the first round at Tampa. The Eagles (14-5-2) advance to the second round in Gainesville where they face Duke on Friday.
After allowing an own goal in the second minute of the game, the Eagles battled back and drew two penalty kicks later in the first half. Senior captain Shea Rhoney and junior Paulina Speckmaier converted the PKs in the fifth and 37th minute, respectively, as the Eagles took the lead before the break. Senior goal keeper Brittany Brown made five saves as the Eagles held strong in the second half to earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament win.
Volleyball: Needing a victory to secure the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Sun Championships, FGCU belted NJIT 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 Saturday to close out the regular season.
The win earns the Eagles (21-10, 10-4 A-Sun) a first-round bye in the tournament, finishing with the second-best record in the conference. The Eagles head to Nashville for the tournament on Friday where they face the winner between Kennesaw State and Stetson.
Women’s Basketball: Solidified by a strong third-quarter performance, FGCU began the season with a 60-36 win at North Carolina A&T last Friday. The Eagles start a season 1-0 for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
