Eagles set to tip off, collect food
Basketball regular season games begin this weekend for the FGCU Eagles as both the men’s and women’s teams open on the road.
The men’s team opens Saturday with a 2 p.m. tipoff at Ohio one day after the women’s team opens at 5:30 p.m. Friday at North Carolina A&T. The Eagles return to Alico Arena to make their home debut on Nov. 16-17.
FGCU’s volleyball team finishes off its regular season on its home court against Lipscomb and New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday and Saturday, respectively. Those games are part of the athletics department’s “feed fgcu” canned food drive throughout the month of November.
Fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to all Eagles home games this month to benefit the campus food pantry. Boxes are posted at the marketing tables at the entrance to Alico Arena. Fans who donate 10 or more canned items receive an FGCU-branded lunch box. The food goes directly to the campus food pantry to help students experiencing food insecurity.
This marks the second year that FGCU has conducted a canned food drive. Last year, 476 pounds of canned items were collected during the month-long campaign.
Including this weekend, fans have nine home dates at which to donate food, including seven basketball games beginning with the men’s home debut against Texas Wesleyan on Nov. 16 followed by the women’s home opener against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 17.
