Stingrays shut out Everblades
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. Vitek Vanecek stopped all 21 shots faced to lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 2-0 victory Tuesday night over the Florida Everblades.
After a scoreless first, the teams continued to hold each other in check for a majority of the second period of play.
The Stingrays scored the game’s first goal at 16:16 of the middle frame. Max Sauve carried the puck into the offensive zone, but slipped and lost possession. The puck rolled toward the net where Florida goaltender Anthony Peters attempted to pounce on the puck to draw a whistle. Colin Mulvey knocked the puck away with one hand and shuffled it in the net for the goal.
Mulvey’s goal is the first allowed by the Everblades in over 7 1/2 periods. Until that point, the last goal scored against Florida was an empty net tally by the Stingrays Joey Leach in the third period of last Wednesday’s game at Germain Arena.
In the third, the Stingrays defense and Vaneck continued to hold off the Blades attack, limiting Florida to just five shots in the third period.
In the final minute, with the net empty, Joey Leach hurled a shot from his own end into the open net to seal the victory.
Peters takes the loss despite a solid outing allowing one goal on 24 shots faced.
The Blades open a two-game weekend road series in Orlando on Saturday.
