Knights hand Seahawks 47-24 beat-down

2 min read

The North Fort Myers Red Knights sent their senior class and home fans riding off into the sunset after beating Cape Coral 47-24 Friday night.

In a game that was completely up for grabs until the start of the fourth quarter, the Knights (4-5; 2-3 district) proved their fighting spirit late. They rushed for six touchdowns against the Seahawks (2-7; 1-4) in a dominant display of their ground game. Of those six scores, five were credited to star running back Zaquandre White.

The FSU-commit rushed for 308 yards on 24 carries. White also scored on runs of 10, 69, 41, 30, and 22 yards and also had a 49-yard highlight reel score called back for a penalty.

While the scoreboard showed a big win for the Knights, all was not lost for the Seahawks. Early in the third quarter, Cape scored on a 1-yard run by Hunter Bontrager to cut the lead to three.

From that point, the game belonged solely to the Knights. North went on to score 27 unanswered points, ultimately icing the game.

While the Seahawks scored a late touchdown, it was of no consolation to coach Larry Gary.

“We gave up way too many points tonight. We have to be tougher on defense if we want to win these types of games,” Gary said.

On the other sideline, Red Knights coach Earnest Graham was proud of his team’s effort on both sides of the ball.

“We played well, broke a few big plays on offense and got the win,” Graham said. “To beat a team like Cape shows the strength and skill of this team.”

Of note for the Seahawks was the play of running back Isaac Washington. The junior rushed for 101 yards and scored the opening TD of the game on a 25-yard run.

With a win next week against Barron Collier in Naples, the Red Knights can finish the season at .500 for the first time in back-to-back seasons since 2005-06.

Cape, on the other hand, will need a quick turnaround in practice this week as it looks to win its 11 straight against crosstown rival Mariner in the annual Black-and-Blue Bowl.
