Verot advances; North decked
Bishop Verot escaped with a straight-set victory Wednesday night in the volleyball Region 4A-3 quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinal round on Saturday.
The Vikings got a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs from Mindie Mabry in their 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 home court victory over Cardinal Mooney.
The win sends the Vikings (24-2) into a semifinal match at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tampa Berkeley Prep, which eliminated LaBelle 3-0.
“It was a good, close match,” said Vikings coach Jeremy Ridgeo. “I’m just glad we were at home.”
Allie Gurlach handed ut 22 assists to lead the Vikings along with Alyssa Collins credits with 19 digs.
“I can’t say the result was unexpected,” said Ridgeo. “I’m happy because we started out a little nervous. When you throw a name on the match like regional quarterfinal, it does get into your mind. We had some significant leads, even in the close games.”
In Region 6A-3, host Clearwater ended the season for North Fort Myers in straight sets, 25-23, 25-23, 25-12 Wednesday night. Clearwater earns another home court match at 2 p.m. Saturday against Charlotte, which advanced with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-13 triumph over Osceola.
