Mariner loses hard-fought match with Immokalee

2 min read

A valiant effort went unfulfilled Tuesday night for the Mariner Tritons, the No. 2 seed in the District 5A-12 volleyball tournament.

The host Tritons were taken out of the tournament in the semifinal round by third-seed Immokalee 25-18, 12-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-8.

“We got off to a slow start in the first game,” said Tritons coach Bridgit Zalesek. “We came together after that only to lose in five games.”

The opponents alternated winning games. Unfortunately for the Tritons, the Indians won games 1, 3 and the deciding fifth.

Junior libero Natalia Christie, playing with a shoulder injury, led the Tritons (8-10) offensively and defensively with junior Kris Clardy notching three kills and three digs while playing an unfamiliar position on the floor.

“Overall it was a great effort,” said Zalesek.

Immokalee earns a spot in the district championship match on Thursday, likely at top-seed Lely.

District 4A-10: Bishop Verot overwhelmed Gateway Charter Tuesday night in the tournament semifinal round by recording 30 team service aces in a 25-3, 25-1, 25-11 triumph. The win sends the top-seeded Vikings to the championship game Thursday night against second-seeded LaBelle, which disposed of Oasis 3-0.

Niki Sabatino led the Vikings with nine aces while Teya Leonard handed out 19 assists.
